Beware of the creeping green slime that suffocates our marine life, also known as algae blooms!

When yard waste, like grass clippings, gets blown or hosed into the street and into our storm drains, it often carries fertilizer.

Our storm drains lead straight to the ocean, and pollutants like fertilizer feed massive, spooky algae blooms that block out the sun and suffocate our beautiful coral reefs. 🪸

✨ Here’s a small act that can make a big difference: Ditch the hose and grab a broom! Instead of hosing yard clippings into the gutter, try to sweep and tie them up in a garden trash bag. When emptying the bag into your green bin, make sure that the green waste is unbagged and loose, and save the trash bag for your next gardening session.

It’s never too late to try an eco-friendly alternative! With 3 more days left, here are ways to participate in National Week Without Driving:

🚴 Bike or Walk: Great for short errands or school drop-offs.

🚌 Take The Bus or The Rail: Sit back, relax, and leave the driving to someone else.

🚗 Carpool with ʻOhana, Colleagues, or Classmates: Share a ride and use the zipper lane if you’re coming into town from the westside to cut traffic in half.

Did you know there are tiny monsters creeping on our highways? 🧌

They’re called microplastics! When our car tires and brakes wear down, they leave behind microscopic debris on our roadways. As soon as the next rain comes, the debris is washed right off the road, down our storm drains, and straight into the kai (ocean).

Because most of our storm drains don't have filters, these tiny plastic monsters can end up in the stomachs of our marine life.

✨ Here’s a small act that can make a big difference: Check your tire pressure! Properly inflated tires wear down much slower, leaving less plastic dust behind. Also, driving smoothly and avoiding harsh braking reduces the toxic debris shedding from your brake pads.

Keep your tires full and our oceans microplastic-free! 🛞

National Week Without Driving is happening October 1–8, 2026, and it’s the perfect time to rethink how we move around our islands!

Choosing alternative ways to travel helps reduce the number of cars on our highways. Fewer cars on the road mean less car fluid and oil, less brake dust, and fewer microplastics washing down our storm drains when it rains.

Did you know that 6 of the top 10 most littered items found on beaches are single-use plastics like food wrappers, bottle caps, and straws? 🥤

A sunny day by the shore is an island favorite, but wind and unbagged rubbish can quickly turn a fun beach day into marine debris. When loose trash blows off a towel or spills out of an overflowing beach bin, rain and wind sweep it into our waterways and storm drains, sending it straight to our ocean.
