The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation’s Storm Water Management Program has created the Hawaiʻi Storm Patrol Young Professionals Program to help prepare the next generation of environmental leaders.

Through education, community engagement, leadership development and hands-on learning, the program introduces students to storm water management and the many careers connected to protecting Hawaiʻi’s waterways. Participants build skills to create a healthier future for Hawaiʻi while learning how everyday actions affect the water around us.

Congratulations to Excelsior Lodge Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF), our 2026 Q2 Adopt-A-Highway Champion! The group covers route AAH-050 in Lāʻie along Kamehameha Highway, from Kokololio Park to Temple Road. Over the past two years, members have completed 5 cleanups and collected 191 bags of trash, helping keep the roadways cleaner for residents, visitors, and the surrounding community.

Mahalo to the Excelsior Lodge IOOF for its continued commitment to keeping Hawaiʻi’s roads trash-free and protecting our storm drains, streams, and oceans from litter.

Sign up your organization, company, community group, or even your family for our Adopt-A-Highway Program and help us attack roadside litter and ocean pollution head on, one stretch of roadway at a time.

Don't let everything in your truck bed blow onto the road! Harness the power of the tarp.
When you're driving on the freeway, lightweight items like yard trimmings, plastic bottles, and cardboard boxes become prime targets for wind gusts.

Once that rubbish hits the road, rain will sweep it right into our storm drains that lead directly to the ocean unfiltered and untreated.

Throw a tarp over your load and lock it down securely with heavy-duty ratchet straps. It takes a few extra minutes, but it ensures that even the tiniest microplastics stay in your truck bed and out of our kai (ocean). 🪸

Trash is an everyday part of our life, from the trash cans in our homes, to the litter on our streets and in storm drains and the landfills in our communities. Being aware of our ʻōpala (trash) is an important part of environmental stewardship and that awareness starts with education.

That’s why we’ve made it easy for local educators and families to bring lessons on storm water and trash reduction into classrooms and homes. Read our blog to learn about the educational resources that can help students explore how everyday actions affect our storm drains, streams, and ocean, while building skills in research, problem-solving, and environmental stewardship.
