Some people become part of a community because of the work they do. Others become part of it because of the way they make people feel. Jim Rupe is one of those special people.

Nominated by Megan Whitmore, Jim is a familiar and much-loved face around Hiawatha. For the past 10.5 years, he has served Hiawatha Public Schools-USD 415 as a crossing guard near the middle school, helping students and citizens safely navigate the First Street crossing.

But Jim does more than help people cross the street. He makes people feel seen.

Jim knows everyone. He waves at everyone. And he might even call you by name as you drive by. That big smile and happy wave have become part of the rhythm of life in Hiawatha — and for many, seeing Jim is one of the best parts of the day.

And somewhere along the way, something special happened: people started looking for Jim, too.

They look for his smile. They watch for his wave. They notice when he's there — and they notice when he's not.

For 10.5 years, Jim has been doing more than helping people safely cross First Street. He's been creating connections, spreading joy and reminding us how much a simple smile, a wave, and a kind heart can mean.

Thank you, Jim, for showing up every day and making a little brighter. We are lucky to have you.

Loretta Edelman Buser doesn’t do all she does for recognition—but today, she’s being recognized as a Hometown Hero thanks to her nominator, Beth Kroll.

Mrs. Buser has dedicated 21 years to Sabetha Middle School, serving as a para for 15 years before spending the past six years at the front desk, where she continues to serve students and staff daily. Her genuine care for the students and the relationships she has built with them over the years have made her a special part of the Middle School family.

But her Bluejay spirit doesn’t stop when the school doors close. Mrs. Buser has served as President of the Sabetha High School Booster Club and has also served on the Project Prom Board.

And when summer rolls around, you’ll find her keeping the community cool as she runs the Sabetha Aquatic Center.

For more than two decades, Loretta has been giving her time, energy and heart to the Sabetha community—and that kind of dedication deserves to be celebrated.

Josh White has been nominated as a by two different people, a testament to the impact he has made in the community.

Josh is a local business owner, City Of Horton Commissioner, President of the Chamber of Commerce Horton, Ks, and volunteer firefighter. Through these roles, he gives his time and leadership to support the Horton community, strengthen local businesses, promote his hometown, and serve wherever he is needed. His commitment to Horton and willingness to step up make him a true Hometown Hero.

Josh also helps host the annual Horton Flea Market, an event that draws visitors from near and far and brings people into Horton to shop, explore, and support local businesses. His efforts help put Horton on the map and create opportunities for the community to come together.

Congratulations, Josh, and thank you for all you do to serve, support, and strengthen the Horton community!

Some people volunteer when they have the time. Phil Wiley makes the time.

Originally from Washington State, Phil is retired after a career as a sprinkler fitter, but retirement has certainly not slowed him down. Instead, he has found countless ways to give his time, talents, and skills to the Horton community.

Phil serves on the boards of Reinvent Horton and Horton Senior Citizens, but his community involvement goes far beyond a board meeting. He also volunteers with a prison ministry — a commitment that requires compassion, patience and a willingness to serve in a place many people would never consider.

You can also find Phil helping at the Horton Thrift Shop, where he puts his skills to work keeping the building in shape, making repairs and building whatever is needed to keep things running smoothly for both shoppers and those who donate.

Over time, the word has spread that Phil is someone who can be counted on. His phone rings often with requests for help, and more often than not, Phil's answer is simply, “Yes.”

Whether it's a community project, a repair job, a local organization, or someone who just needs a helping hand, Phil is ready to lend his time and talents. He doesn't look for recognition or asks what he'll get in return. He simply sees a need and does what he can to fill it.

Phil's kindness, willingness to serve and genuine love for his community are what make him a true Hometown Hero. Horton is fortunate to have someone who is always ready to answer the call — no matter how busy he may be.
