Using basic equipment, thieves are increasingly employing a "drilling and draining" technique to steal fuel, leaving vehicle owners with expensive repair costs.

This destructive method of theft is becoming more frequent as the conflict with Iran has driven gasoline costs to a four-year peak, and as older, less damaging ways of siphoning fuel have become more difficult to execute.

In Los Angeles, where regular gasoline is currently priced at roughly $6 per gallon, service professional Lupes Armas noted that his shop now replaces a drilled gas tank about once a week.

Previously, such repairs occurred only a few times annually.

The National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies reports that while data is currently largely anecdotal just weeks into the war and the resulting price surge, insurers are beginning to see a rise in related damage claims.

On Friday, Iran declared it would reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil transit route that has been a primary focus of diplomatic efforts to resolve the war between Iran and the U.S.-Israeli coalition.

Following this announcement, the price of oil dropped rapidly by over 10%, falling below $89 per barrel.
