I'm asked frequently "if my car has a bad head gasket, why there is no coolant mixed with my oil? The answer is a little complicated but basically an engine head has more than oil and coolant moving thew it. Ports (holes) also allow air to come into the engine (intake) and to leave the engine (exhaust) all of these ports are sealed from each other by the head gasket.
This gasket can fail in between any of these ports . So it's a matter of were the failure is coolant to oil port coolant in oil, coolant to exhaust white smoke and may drip from tail pipe, coolant to intake lots of white smoke and could stop motor due to cylinder filling up .

One of the test we use is called a leak down test. The tool puts pressure on each cylinder one at a time.
This test confermed a blown head gasket or cracked head at the # 2 cylinder.
