🚙The NCDMC has made some vehicle registration changes that you 🫵need to know about. Please read!
✅Starting October 1, 2026, North Carolina is switching to a fully digital vehicle registration system that permanently eliminates physical license plate stickers and printed registration cards.
• No Stickers: You will no longer receive or display annual renewal stickers on your license plate.
• No Paper Cards: You will no longer get automatic printed registration cards in the mail or need to carry one in your car.
• Digital Tracking: Police officers check your active registration status in real-time using your license plate number.
• Out-of-State Travel: If you travel outside North Carolina, you should remove your old plate stickers since the state has notified other regions of this change.
🚙What Stays the Same
• Renewals: You still get a renewal notice in the mail or via email 90 days before your registration ends.
• Inspections: You must still get your car inspected within 90 days before your renewal date.
• Fees and Taxes: You must still pay your yearly registration fees and local vehicle property taxes on time.
Getting a Copy
• You do not need a physical card.
• If you still want a paper copy, you can download a free PDF from the NCDMV website to print at home.
• You can also pay a $5 fee to have a copy printed at a license plate agency or mailed to you.
