The Dirt Rider Lab Honda ATC 200X Story

Since a very young age I have been a motorcycle/ATC enthusiast. It was the early 80’s and a lot of the older kids on my street had ATCs and dirt bikes. Down the street from where I lived was a river with woods on either side where older kids had carved out miles of trails. I can remember running down to the river almost every time I heard the sound of a motorcycle or ATC. I would just stand there and watch these kids ride. I can still remember the distinct smell of the mud along that river bank. It had a sulfur odor to it.

The boy two houses down from me was an amazing ATC rider. I would put him up against, Wade Thiesen for a wheelie contest. He had many 3 wheelers, but the one I loved the most was his 1985 Honda ATC 200X. I knew then, that at some point in my life I had to own one. In my early 40’s I had finally decided that the time was now. I purchased it from a guy in Hanover, PA for a very reasonable price. It would benefit from a little work but nothing crazy; it seemed. After getting it home and riding it around a couple days I noticed it definitely lacked low end power. My 200S was torquier than this thing. I did a compression test and determined it would benefit from a new top end. So, I got to work.

I decided to do a full teardown and refurbishment of the 200X. Here are pics from the project.

When I looked closely at the cam I could tell there was damage to lobes. The journal was also pretty messed up. So I called WEBCAMS and spoke to the tech dept. I sent them my cam for them to inspect and they were able to tell from its profile that it was for Top End speed. This explains some of the lack of bottom end power. So, ended up getting a new cam, new rockers, and new springs for the valves since they were beefed to work with the performance cam.
