A limited supply of Carrillo connecting rods are back in stock.
New and preowned with new ARP bolts in the refurbished rods.
The highest level.
Lowest reciprocating weights. (315 grams)

We always try to focus on Honda cb750 engine building and try to develop the perfect Honda engine.
But,
We have always been a bit sentimental when a "father and son" project needs our help.
Here is a 1972 Honda purchased brand new by a gentleman that hasn't been run for years or maybe a decade or so.
The son brought it to us to get running again so the father could ride it a few more times.
Runs really well ..... now.

Hello.

The AHRMA road race engine continues ... actually, some things pertain to a performance street bike engine also.

Now that the plated cylinder is done and is some of the best workmanship we have seen, the top end mathematics and checking is about to start.

First step:
The piston to cylinder deck height is determined by some cylinder base area milling while the sleeves out and a variety of base gasket thicknesses.
Zero deck height on this engine is the goal.

Next step:
Basic checks of the piston to cylinder head clearances are checked and recorded with compression ratios checked and recorded shortly.
Note:
With the selected camshaft, our compression ratio target is 12.8 to 1.
More top end progress soon.

Interesting talks:
I was talking to a skilled engine building enthusiast recently about valve train weights, rotating weight, main bearing wear and reciprocating weight recently.
I mentioned my concern with getting reciprocating reduced (rods and piston weights) and he mentioned some math.
He said:
350 grams (nearly stock) of reciprocating weight (rods and pistons) at 10,700 rpm equals 1 ton at TDC.
With main bearing wear accelerating with lightening of the crankshaft further and further.

Reminded me of a conversation with the turner balancing folks.
I asked what does a gram or two of weight increase to at 10,000 rpm.
He hesitated and mentioned that normally they convert that question or concern to pressure on the bearings.

Note:
I didn't research any of these topics to "fact check" so be nice.

This class will be featuring many Honda cb750 race bikes against some stiff competition from around the world.

Anyway.
Here are 2 very high-level cylinders being fitted to Honda cb750 engines.
Here are a few details:
Cylinders were machined and alloy cylinder sleeves were fitted.
The cylinders were treated to the Nikasil plating process with extreme final honing accuracy.
Race proven Wiseco/CycleX pistons are used.

People keep asking why go thru the expense and effort?

Advantages of a Nikasil‑Plated Cylinder
Nikasil (nickel–silicon carbide) plating is an electroplated coating applied to aluminum cylinder bores to create a hard, wear‑resistant surface that allows aluminum pistons to run directly without iron liners. This technology, developed by Mahle in the late 1960s, offers several key benefits over traditional cast‑iron or steel liners.

1. Superior Wear Resistance
The silicon carbide particles in the nickel matrix make Nikasil one of the hardest materials available, far exceeding the hardness of cast iron. This greatly reduces cylinder wear, especially under high‑pressure and high‑temperature conditions, and can extend engine life.

2. Reduced Friction and Improved Efficiency
Nikasil’s low friction coefficient and smooth surface reduce piston ring drag, improving engine efficiency, fuel economy, and performance.

3. Enhanced Heat Dissipation
Aluminum cylinders with Nikasil plating conduct heat far better than cast iron. This helps prevent overheating, maintains consistent operating temperatures, and supports higher performance outputs.

4. Weight Reduction
By eliminating the need for heavy cast‑iron liners, Nikasil‑plated cylinders allow for lighter engine blocks and components, which is advantageous in high‑performance applications like racing, motorcycles, and aircraft engines.

5. Corrosion Resistance
Unlike iron liners, Nikasil resists rust and chemical corrosion, making it ideal for marine engines, dirt bikes, and other vehicles exposed to moisture or harsh environments.

6. Compatibility with Aluminum Pistons
The coating’s thermal expansion characteristics match aluminum pistons, allowing for tighter tolerances and smoother operation.

7. Longevity and Durability
Nikasil coatings can outlast many other cylinder components, especially in extreme conditions, and are used in high‑performance and racing engines by brands like Porsche, BMW, Ducati, and Jaguar.

8. Design Flexibility
The ability to run aluminum cylinders without liners enables more compact, lightweight engine designs while maintaining durability LN Engineering.

In summary, Nikasil‑plated cylinders offer longer life, better performance, lighter weight, and improved efficiency compared to traditional liners, making them a preferred choice for high‑performance and specialized engine applications.

1st two photos:
Check out the winner of the prestigious "I love silicone" award.
A shop friend of ours (experienced engine builder) sent us photos of a Honda cb750 sohc engine that needed refreshment.
Check out the amount of silicone used everywhere ....... funny thing .... It still leaked horribly.

3rd and 4th photos:
The AHRMA road race builds continued.
Carrillo connecting rod refresh and lightened rocker arms were some random progress from last week.
Plenty of cylinder base gasket thicknesses are in stock to get things "just right".

Are you getting bored looking at engine parts?
Hope not ... because that's what we do.

Last week's activities:
Rule of thumb ..... always have several jobs in the works when waiting on parts.

So,
Here is another lower end for a AHRMA formula 750 road racer going together.

1st two photos: (engine case procedures)
Disassemble an engine.
Clean for visual inspection.
Kwik measurement check of main bearing areas.
Remove cylinder studs.
Chase all 6 and 8mm threaded holes.
Heli-coils or welding if needed.
Install sandblasting covers and blast. Covers are to keep sandblast media out of the inside to cause problems.
Perform breather modifications. 7 different areas.
Line lap engine cases for perfect straightness and roundness.
Measure and fit coated crankshaft main bearings to .0015 to .002.
Install finished crankshaft to check endplay and smooth rotation.

3rd photo:
Here is another lightened crankshaft given to us to use in the engine. Not that great.
Note:
Notice the "blind hole" ball bearings in the crankshaft ... the bearings are to block off the oil hole that was drilled to join the main journal to the rod journal.
The lightened crankshaft still has the bearings in them and were hit with the cutter when lightening crankshaft.
Plenty of circumstances have happened when the compromised bearings have fell out ...... loss of oil pressure of course.
4th photo:
Here is an example of the crud building up in the "blind hole" area and waiting to block-off the connecting rod oiling hole.
We have seen videos where people simply recommend spraying brake cleaner through the oiling holes without removing the ball bearings and saying your good. Nope!

New product for the Honda cb750 sohc racing world.

5mm redesigned valve guides.
Highest-level cast-iron material. This is the same cast iron material we have been using for years for street and racing.
Longer on the topside for more support but still retains plenty of room for large camshafts.
Slightly changed taper in the port side.
All products made by Kibblewhite for us.

Some 5mm valve history.
5mm valve kits have been around and raced for over a decade with great success in the TQ mini sprint car world (Honda engine powered)
TQ mini sprint car racing is most demanding a Honda cb750 engine has ever seen.
We purchased the remaining inventory of valve kits from Kibblewhite and decided upgrade the valves guides.

5mm weight savings:
34mm intake valve with a stock 6.5 stem is 48 grams.
34mm intake valve with a 5mm stem is only 38 grams.
28mm exhaust valve with a stock 6.5 stem is 43.5 grams.
28mm exhaust valve with 5mm stem valve is 30 grams.
Less weight.
Less spring pressures.
Less port obstruction.
Less rocker and camshaft wear.

New guides to be completed in 6 to 8 weeks.

Speaking of engine component weights.
The 2nd photo shows a 21.30 stock weight crankshaft and a 17.20 crankshaft.
The 17.20 crankshaft was tried many years ago on our race bike.
We eventually settled on crankshafts in the 20 lb range.

Just a reminder,
4,5,6 or more Honda cb750 pure race bikes will compete against the top vintage race bike brands still in existence.
