S6 WRC front crossmember. I built the model off a scan, had all the sheet metal bits laser cut, machined some of it in my lathe and mill, did some forming on the press with some 3d printed dies I designed, cut all the tubing with some 3d “trim guides”, and had weld it up for me. He had an original s6 front subframe to make the welding jig from. Biggest pain in the ass was machining the cup main mounting bits. All the tubing is docol, sheet metal is Strenx, with a couple 4130 thrown in there for the smaller machined bits. All in all, I’m pleased with it, and have 90% of what I need to make 4 more.

Starting to move past design on a number of items, particularly those applied to the chassis. In preparation for the cage, I made these gussets both for my own car and a friend’s S6 project in Japan. These were fun. My first design wasn’t great, due to the fact that I just estimated where the end of the part would be since the scanned part was already welded and there were pretty fat weld beads in the scan. The fix was to model the cage, scan a chassis without a gusset, align that scan to the WRC one, and switch back and forth between scans, modeling to a virgin chassis while being faithful to the bends and shapes of the gussets from the WRC car scan. Dimple dies are printed from petg cf. I also made bending dies for each bend profile….but ended up abandoning them since the metal created much sharper bends. I guess I could sell these to anyone who is interested

Nothing “new” but these are the non-rendered version of what I posted the other day. This is the view I stare at during modeling….minus the carbon texture which I add at the end. Anyway, this is the S6 heater assembly. Air comes in from the cowl, through the blower motor to the heater box where it passes through a small radiator/heater core, and out through a vent along the glass in the center and at the driver side vent by the glass. There’s a valve that controls the coolant flow to the radiator. If you pull the k**b on the dash, the hot water flows through the radiator and gives you hot air. Otherwise there is a bypass on the engine side that allows coolant to keep flowing while the valve is closed.

I haven’t really been posting too much. Much of what I have been doing is on the design front, and using those designs to verify fitment, create tooling, etc etc. The heater box I’ve already made but the original tooling bad burned up in the fire so I took it as an opportunity to tighten up fitment and such. I’ll be posting much more frequently as designs turn into parts.

Got to spend some time with this 1999 WRC car and note some of the deltas from the 97-98 WRC cars. I scanned some of the obvious deltas. Stay tuned I guess. There’s some fun updates coming. #スバル　 #インプレッサ

I did a bit of an exercise comparing the WRC and 22B front and rear fenders. There are the obvious differences that can be seen from afar and from pictures like the arch differences, fuel lid, and side skirt area, but a few that are less obvious. Anyway, enjoy. I probably should have made a YouTube video highlighting the differences. Maybe later.

So I’ve been blessed to have a few friends let me scan their WRC cars (97, 98, 99, 2000, 2005…). My original intention was to just use the data to redo my cage, and get some models for some random carbon bits. That then evolved into the widebody where the plan was to 3d print myself a widebody, make a mold and put new carbon panels on the car the burned along w the shop. I’ve now decided to partner up with to produce a metal widebody with the data pulled off the WRC cars. Being handmade the WRC panels are all somewhat unique, even among models of the same year, but they still follow an FIA spec. We’ll be smoothing out the variability, perfecting fitment and going from there. I have a few bumper options scanned and modeled, ranging from tarmac to gravel versions that I can make in carbon/fiberglass. In all likelihood, I’m going to install one on my car, make a mold and take it off, unless someone wants to donate a car. (Free install job and I’ll splash a mold off the car). #インプレッサ　 #スバル

Went to GR Garage to spend some time with the FT-1, the design concept that ended up largely being the basis for the MKV Supra. I took a bunch of pics, videos, etc that I’ll post in the coming days. It’s a lot of smoke and mirrors being a concept car and not a production car but the overall design and concept is awesome. I’d love to get myself a Supra and make a kit like this (but it seats two, and I have 3 kids so…).
