Can’t believe I get to pilot this thing next Thursday at the Bullring in Las Vegas for the USLC Nationals. I said I wanted to drive one more time at a national event but didn’t think it would be this one. The entry list is at almost 40 already with some of the biggest names in the series. All the glory to God and a huge thanks to Matt McMillian for allowing me to run his car and making it all possible. 🙏🏻🙌

This is one of those post that you REALLY don’t want to make. But I think it is important as you can’t teach accountability and not hold yourself accountable. We went to the World Finals at Dominion this past week. We were on a tire I had no experience with but Keaton had some experience on the track. Saturday for qualifying we had to qualify in the rain and he had never driven in the wet and it was my first time fielding a car on a wet road course. We suffered from our inexperience but made improvement as the day went on. Sunday came and it was dry and sunny and we had expected to be back in the top 5 in happy hour practice. We were even faster than we had expected and felt really good going into the A main despite starting 9th. Keaton made some great moves and before long had worked his way up to top three. A late caution gave him the chance to challenge the front runners and had already been running laps fast enough for top 2. He made some good moves and briefly took the lead but over ran a little and settled into 2nd. We were ecstatic! Rolled through scales and everything was good. I was confident in the legality of the car I had prepared as nothing was put close enough to cause any doubt of passing tech. Then the tech guy asked to measure a spacer, sure no problem, then I saw the problem and my heart sank. One small washer tucked in behind the spacer on the lower A arm. The washer in itself would have been legal as was the spacer but the two together added up to .050” more than allowed. How that washer ended up on there will keep me awake for a while. On the 9 hour drive home all I could think about was how did it happen? This made 0 difference in handling and speed. It was just filling a gap between the Heim and frame and literally made no difference but the rules are the rules. Keaton suffered a DQ through no fault of his own and there was nothing I could do about it. He drove his heart out and earned that spot and through some slight oversight on my part it was taken away. Sure I’d rather never think about this ever again but I teach accountability to my drivers or try to anyways and this time I need to be accountable. It’s embarrassing and it hurts to work so hard and sweat every detail and make a mistake like that, especially one that had negative consequences to my driver that did nothing wrong. To come from the back to the front against the very best in the country and do it with not even bending a bumper showed his talent and tenacity balanced with respect. I can’t fix it but I can be accountable and do better.
