Maine law allows studded tires starting October 1, so if you've been waiting for the calendar to give you the green light, you're good to go.

Of course, October 1 doesn't necessarily mean it's time to put them on right this second. Keep an eye on the forecast and your driving conditions, and make sure your winter tires are in good shape before you need them.

A strange noise doesn't always mean a major repair. A warning light doesn't always mean disaster. A small leak doesn't always mean something is about to give up.

But ignoring them gives small problems plenty of time to become bigger ones.
