The Evolution of the Car TrunkExternal Luggage:

Early motorists in the late 1800s and early 1900s strapped actual travel luggage or steamer chests onto racks at the back of their vehicles.

French Innovation: French luggage makers like Moynat pioneered custom-fitted rear limousine trunks and sliding storage mechanisms in Paris during the early 1900s, helping shape how vehicle storage was organized.

Integrated Design: Manufacturers transitioned from external boxes to built-in, rear compartments integrated directly into the body of the car during the 1930s.

The Name Origin: Americans adopted the word "trunk" because people literally strapped physical storage trunks to the backs of early cars before the space became built-in. In the UK, the storage area is called a "boot," a term inherited from the "boot lockers" used on older horse-drawn carriages.
