239 years ago today, Williamsport became Williamsport.
On February 20, 1787, General Otho Holland Williams—Revolutionary War hero, aide to George Washington, and one of Maryland's most respected citizens—officially laid out the town that would bear his name.

Williams had purchased the land from the Oller family and saw its potential immediately. Situated at the confluence of the Potomac River and Conococheague Creek, with fertile land and access to major trade routes, the location was perfect for a commercial hub.

He surveyed 60 lots along what would become Conococheague Street. He named the town after himself. (Fair, honestly. He earned it.)

And then he did something unusual: he didn't stay. Williams kept his primary residence at Springfield Farm, just outside of town, while Williamsport grew into exactly what he envisioned—a thriving center of trade and commerce.

By 1823, Williamsport was incorporated. By the 1850s, it was one of the busiest ports on the C&O Canal. The town Williams sketched on paper had become real.
General Williams died in 1794, just seven years after founding the town. He's buried at River View, overlooking the place he created.

Happy 239th birthday, Williamsport. The General would be proud.
