The Real Cost Behind a Proper Diagnostics
When a mobile mechanic comes out to diagnose your concern, there’s a lot happening behind the scenes — long before a wrench even touches the vehicle.
Here’s what most people don’t see:
• Time investment — Traveling to your location, navigating traffic, and dedicating focused diagnostic time.
• Fuel cost — Every mile driven has a real expense, especially for mobile service.
• Consumable materials — Cleaners, gloves, rags, sprays, sealants, and other items used during inspection.
• Tool wear & calibration — Scanners, gauges, lights, meters, and specialty equipment all require maintenance and replacement.
• Education & training — Years of learning, certifications, and staying current with modern vehicle systems.
• Setup & teardown time — Preparing the mobile workstation, organizing tools, and documenting findings.
🧠 Why Not All Diagnostic Fees Are Applied Toward Repairs
If every inspection/Diagnostics was fully credited toward repair, that would mean all the time, fuel, materials, and expertise used to diagnose your concern were provided free of charge.
That’s not sustainable, and it’s not honest business.
A fair diagnostic fee covers the work required to find the problem.
A repair quote covers the work required to fix the problem.
They are two different services.
⚠️ A Word of Caution About “Free Diagnostics”
If someone says:
“Don’t worry, the diagnostic goes toward the repair.”That cost doesn’t magically disappear.
It gets added somewhere else — usually inside the estimate or repair cost without the client realizing it.
This is one of the most common industry tricks used to make pricing look cheaper upfront.
Clear pricing may deter a few people…
But clear transparent pricing and communication is the only way in my book
