These BMW headlights needed more than a quick polish. 👀

Protective film had been removed, leaving adhesive behind. Underneath that was deteriorating headlight coating and oxidation. It looked like the film had been applied over headlights that were already cloudy.

First came the adhesive cleanup, then the restoration work to address the damaged outer surface and bring back the clarity.

Quite a difference! You can actually see the detail inside the headlights again.

Cloudy headlights aren’t always caused by the same thing. Knowing what you’re working with is a big part of getting the best result.

Removing old headlight tint film from a Porsche Cayman. This was definitely NOT your typical headlight restoration job! 😂

Someone had applied a dark plastic tint coating to these headlights, and removing it turned into quite the project.

Here’s a little behind-the-scenes footage of what I was dealing with.

Sometimes the best tools are meant for something else! 😄

I love these plastic razor blades for removing stuck-on things like stickers, tree sap, or built-up grime, but in this case, they helped remove the loose, peeling factory coating from this headlight.

It didn’t remove everything. The coating that was still firmly attached required some serious sanding and correction afterward. Once all of the failed coating was removed, I followed through with my normal restoration process to bring the headlights back to a clear, smooth finish and protect them again.

Every set of headlights is a little different… and sometimes you have to get creative with the tools! 👊

Yes, wet sanding headlights looks a little scary. 😳

But when the factory coating has failed, properly removing that damaged surface is part of getting results like this.

🎉 TEN YEARS OF AWESOME HEADLIGHTS! 🎉

Ten years ago today, Awesome Headlights officially began. What started as something I enjoyed doing has turned into something far bigger than I ever expected.

Over the past decade, Awesome Headlights has operated in two states and restored thousands of headlights. Along the way, I’ve saved customers thousands of dollars by restoring headlights they thought needed to be replaced.

But the part I’m most proud of isn’t the number of headlights.

I’ve had customers tell me they avoided driving at night because they simply couldn’t see well enough. After having their headlights restored, they could drive at night again with confidence. That’s when this becomes a lot more than making an old car look better.

I’ve also had the privilege of working on everything from everyday family vehicles and work trucks to Porsches, Jaguars, Range Rovers and other vehicles whose owners trusted me to do the job right. Auto repair shops, body shops and dealerships have trusted me enough to refer their own customers to me.

Today, Awesome Headlights has 240 five-star Google reviews, and every one of those represents a person I had the opportunity to meet. I’ve always wanted this to be more than showing up, doing a job and leaving. I want people to remember the experience as much as the transformation.

Along the way, I’ve also been able to give back by supporting veterans and first responders and donating services to nonprofit organizations and community events.

And after ten years, I still genuinely love doing this.

To every customer who hired me, referred a friend, left a review, followed the business, shared a post, stopped by one of my displays or simply told somebody about Awesome Headlights...

One of my favorite little car care tools…

I originally bought this handheld blower when I was doing auto detailing. These days, it has a permanent place in my headlight restoration setup.

After the headlights are restored, water loves to hide around the edges, seams and trim. And when I’m getting ready to apply the ceramic coating, I don’t want that water suddenly finding its way back onto the lens.

A few seconds with this little blower gets the trapped water out without touching the freshly prepared surface.

It’s also a great tool to have when washing your own car. Blow water out of mirrors, emblems, door handles, trim, grilles and all those other places that mysteriously start dripping five minutes after you thought the car was dry. 😂

Sometimes the simplest tools are the ones you end up using the most.

This one fought me a little… but the results were worth it. 😄

My friend Josh recently bought this GMC Sierra 2500 for his outdoor general contracting business, and the headlights had definitely seen better days.

The lenses had heavy oxidation, failed factory coating, embedded debris and years of rock chips. This wasn’t going to be a quick polish. It took some serious correction to get through the damaged surface and bring the clarity back.
