Tire Rack Street Survival

Tire Rack Street Survival It’s more than driving – it’s about living! The primary emphasis of Tire Rack Street Survival is a “hands-on” driving experience in real-world situations!

Teenagers learn from knowledgeable driving instructors how their actions govern a car's responses, what the limits of their vehicles are, and how to avoid accidents entirely. Unlike other advanced driving schools, students use their own vehicles so that the skills they learn can be directly translated to their own daily driving experiences as they drive home.

Last weeks school by the KY Region of the SCCA at the National Corvette Motorsport Park (in the 13 acre paddock) started out a bit wet and basically stayed that way with brief moments of clearing. It was 100% dry in the classroom where I was all day. ; )

Greetings Heroes!

It's Friday! Its June! It's HOT! I'm concerned about late August if it's this hot in early June. Well, "we'll burn that bridge when we come to it".

We had a great week at the International Tire Rack Street Survival HQ. We opened 3 new schools this week, we've reached 60, completed schools or open for registration!

Matt Fraley opened a 2nd school for his Mohawk Hudson Region (MoHud Region for the cool kids). This will be in October. They have completed their 1st school in April. Great job all!

Michael Washington (aka M-Dub) and Cy Smith are bringing a Street Survival school back to the Knoxville area. The Smoky Mountain Chapter of the BMW CCA will host. This will also be in October. Thanks guys!

Gary Lund has opened a school for his Space Coast Region of the PCA in Melbourne FL. This is their 3rd school in as many years. So far, this will be our last school of the year, in mid November.

We got some great coverage for the Illini Chapter BMW CCA's back to back schools this July from ABC affiliate WQAD in Davenport, IA. Bruce Huber did a excellent job in a 6+ minute interview. Check it out at www.youtube.com. It was also picked up and posted on yahoo! News. Thanks to Gary Fong from Brandware PR for their continuous support.

We had 4 schools last weekend and we have 2 this weekend!

🚗 Last Weekend’s Action - 4 Schools.

5/30 - Chicago Region PCA #1 - Joliet, IL. 1 seat away from a SOLD OUT! school. Dana Comolli had the troops lined up and ready to go. This was their 3rd school at the Autobahn Country Club. Great job to all!!

5/30 - Kentucky Region SCCA #1 - Bowling Green, KY. I was lucky to be involved in this school at my 'home' track in Bowling Green at the National Corvette Motorsport Park. 13 students gained life saving skills thanks to Dave Melton and crew! This was a good school at a great facility. The 50% chance of rain in the morning continued into the afternoon . Good job to all involved!

5/30 - South Bend Region SCCA #1 - South Bend, IN. The Region hosted their 26th school at the Tire Racks Headquarters and Test Track. . They are also hosting a 2nd school this year for the 1st time since 2018 and that second school will qualify for the '+1=2x$' campaign. Kim Bolinger led the charge! Strong work all!

5/31 - Potomac Region PCA #1 - Summit Point WV. Doug Hough reports - "We had an excellent TRSS yesterday (Sunday). Beautiful weather. All 20 students showed up and seemed to have a good time (as did the parents). Only glitch was that the skid pad dried up very fast, and the Summit Point water truck crew were not as prompt as we would have liked. Looking forward to our second TRSS on October 25." Great job Doug! Thanks for the report!

Greetings Heroes!

Hey everybody! It's Friday! I hope you had a great Holiday weekend. With this past weekend, we begin what's known as the 100 Deadliest Days. The period between Memorial Day and Labor Day is known as the 100 Deadliest Days for Teen Drivers—a period when crashes involving teen drivers spike. When a teen hits the road with this often newfound freedom, many underestimate the dangers of distraction, speeding, and risky driving behaviors.

AAA’s review of crash data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows a 30% increase in deadly crashes involving teen drivers during summer compared to the rest of the year. On average, eight people lose their lives every day in a teen-related crash between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

"During the summer, teen drivers are on the road more often, usually with friends, which increases the risk of distraction and dangerous driving habits,” said Rachel Wilson, Director of Driver Education for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Many feel invincible behind the wheel, underestimating the dangers of speeding, distractions, and not wearing a seatbelt. But crashes hit different when they happen to you —and by then, it’s too late."

Key Risk Factors for Teen Drivers

New teen drivers (ages 16-17) are nearly three times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash compared to adults. The biggest contributing factors include:

Distraction: Nearly six out of ten teen crashes involve some form of distraction. Teen passengers are the leading distraction, followed by cell phones and infotainment systems.
Speeding: Almost 30% of fatal teen crashes involve excessive speed.
Driving with teen passengers: Studies show that the risk of a fatal crash increases with each additional teen passenger (NHTSA).
Failure to wear a seatbelt: Seatbelt use significantly reduces the likelihood of serious injury or death.
"Teens are inexperienced behind the wheel, and that lack of experience combined with risky behaviors is a dangerous mix,” said Molly Hart, spokeswoman for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “More teens die in car crashes during summer than any other season. Parents must take an active role in coaching their teens and reinforcing safe driving habits.”

“Crashes Hit Different’ This Summer

The key risk factors for teen drivers also happen to be the four leading contributors to traffic injuries and fatalities for all drivers. On average, someone is killed in a car crash every 12 minutes on our nation’s roads, primarily due to these four factors.

Let's take this to heart and do everything we can to help decrease these 100 Deadliest Days for Teen Drivers!

We had a quite short week at the International Tire Rack Street Survival HQ. No new schools opened or committed.

But.... after taking last weekend off from hosting schools we have 4 this weekend!

5/30 - Kentucky Region SCCA #1 - Bowling Green, KY. I'm lucky to be involved in this school at my 'home' track in Bowling Green at the National Corvette Motorsport Park. I'll be leading the classroom duties and helping out where I can. The school is on their 14 acre paddock. A HPDE for motorcycles will be going on the track at the same time. The SCCA region will run a big Solo event (Autocross) on Sunday. 13 students will gain life saving skills thanks to Dave Melton and crew! I'm looking forward to getting back in the classroom for the 1st time this year. This is the Region's 8th school. 84 degrees as a high and 50% chance of rain in the morning. Sounds OK to me!

5/30 - South Bend Region SCCA #1 - South Bend, IN. The Region is hosting their 26th school at the Mother Ship (Tire Racks Headquarters and Test Track) starting back in 2008. They also ran 19 schools under the Tire Rack's hosting banner until that stopped in 2019. They've got a solid school of 13 students. They are also hosting a 2nd school this year for the 1st time since 2018 and that second school will qualify for the '+1=2x$' campaign. Kim Bolinger is leading the charge! 77 degrees and partly cloudy is predicted, sounds pretty perfect!

5/31 - Potomac Region PCA #1 - Summit Point WV. Doug Hough has a team ready for the 20 students coming to the Summit Point Raceway for their 1st to 2 schools this year. There will be 4 schools at Summit Point this year between this host and the National Capital Chapter BMW CCA. The 1st was 2 weeks ago. September and October will finish out the year there. 70 degrees and partly cloudy is predicted, now that is perfect!

All smiles from the Students / Coaches at recent school in Rosemount. It was their 3rd school this year!

Greetings Heroes!

Hey everybody! It's Friday! You made it to a Holiday weekend. While you're heading off to the Indy 500 or the lake, the mountains, beach, or a cabin for the long couple of days please remember the reason. Memorial Day is celebrated in the United States to honor and mourn U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the armed forces. Unlike Veterans Day, which honors all who served, Memorial Day specifically commemorates those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of the nation during peace and war. Most of us have a family member or a close friend, putting politics aside paid that sacrifice and are due our respect.

Last weekend we where at the BMW CCA Foundation for meeting and opening the new exhibit. It looks awesome. If your in the area or looking for a cool destination take a look! The show runs thru the end of the year.

We had a good week at the International Tire Rack Street Survival HQ, so lets get into it!

Bryan Hall opened 2 schools for his NE Ohio Region SCCA. They will host a school in July and another in October. The 2nd school will qualify them for our +1=2x$ campaign (2x the sponsorship money.)

We are taking the weekend off for the holiday, so no schools this weekend. We'll be back the following weekend with 4 schools!

🚗 Last Weekend’s Action -

5/17 - National Capital Chapter BMW CCA #1 - Summit Point, WV This was their 39th school in their 21 year TRSS history. Afshawn Towfighi / Rafael Garces had the team ready for the 27 students. Afshawn, being a BMW CCA Foundation Ambassador was at the exhibit opening and open house Friday & Saturday in Greenville SC and got home to Fairfax VA past midnight and was on site Sunday morning very early! This is a great effort!

From last weekend's event in Mason OH (Cincinnati) and the Buckeye Chapter BMW CCA's 45th school. Thanks to all!🏅

Greetings Heroes!

As you read this, the TRSS team is in Greer, SC for a BMW CCA Foundation Board meeting and the opening of the newest exhibit at the Ultimate Driving Museum - BMW M3: 40 Years of Evolution. The exhibit will run until until early next year but it looks amazing. Street cars, race cars, special models, all very cool. Michael Mitchell, Dana Davis, Dan Staudt & Christine Chabot really knocked it out of the park. Check it out - bmwccafoundation.org. I just saw a draft of a video that will advertise the exhibit that I will post a link as soon as it's hosted.

We had a great week at the HQ, lets get into it!

I need to correct an error from last week. I stated that the North Star Chapter BMW CCA had made a significate donation after their 3rd school. That was incorrect on my part. I looked at the form and thought I saw a certain box filled out. It was totally my fault and I appreciate Tracy Rolf's understanding in this error and I want to thank her for calling it to my attention.

The best example of 'Mr. Persistent' I know, JR Fisher, opened a 2nd school for the DelVal Chapter BMW CCA AND 2 schools for his Philly Region SCCA. The Philly Region schools will be in July & August. The 2nd DelVal Fall school will qualify for the +1=2x$ campaign btw... These will be school number 36 & 37 for Philly, and the 13th for DelVal. 37 + 13 = 50!! Almost all done by JR! Thanks to JR & his Philly crew! 👏👏

Dan Gurney has opened his committed school for the Arizona Region SCCA for October. This will be lucky 13 for them. Thanks Dan! 👏

Didier Meyer has committed the Buckeye Chapter BMW CCA for a September school in Cincinnati. He wants to catch his breath after the school last weekend before he opens for registration. Thanks Didier! 👏

The biggest news this week is announcing the launch of our National Social Media Campaign. Using the Tire Rack's Digital Media department we are buying FaceBook & InstaGram ad's. This is a planned, year long, 3 step endeavor. We are geo-targeting within a 75 mile radius of the venues. We will be targeting people such as Parenting Teenagers, Parents with teenagers (13-17 years), Parents with adult children (18-26) years, Grandparents, Nephew and Nieces, Vehicle Insurance, Auto-Owners Insurance or Auto Maintenance, Driver's Education, Automobile Safety, Used Car, Defensive Driving, Driver's license, Driving test etc.. This will take while for the infamous "algorithm" to learn who/how to go after but we are very encouraged about the potential of this expensive effort. The hope is this will strengthen our schools. Our fill rates are lower than we have had in recent years. We are currently running at 61% of overall capacity, it was 75% that this point of the year in ’25, 90% in ‘24. The condition of economy, including gas prices and the timing of our rate increase has had a impact to be sure. It is a flexible system since we will be monitoring these to see what works, what and where it doesn't. If this is successful, it is hopeful that it'll be easier to get someone to host a school or add another school to their Chapter / Region's event calendar. If you start to see the ads, share them with people you know! More as this develops.

🚗 Last Weekend’s Action -

5/9 - Milwaukee Region SCCA #1 - Oak Creek, WI. They held their 19th school in their history. Charlie Caliendo had the team ready. 19 new drivers are now more educated and safer drivers thanks to the efforts of our great volunteers. Great effort! 👏

5/9 - Connecticut Valley Chapter BMW CCA #1 - Colchester, CT. David Ortoli had his first of two schools this year. This was their 30th school! This was at the wonderful Consumer Reports Testing Facility again! Great venue, great team! 18 students! Thanks David and crew! 👏

5/9 - Buckeye Chapter BMW CCA #1 - Mason, OH Didier Meyer held his 1st solo school at the helm. 15 students are now safer as we all are. This was number 45 for the Chapter that started back in 2005. Thanks Buckeye's! 👏

All smiles from the Students, Parents and some of the Coaches and Volunteers in the Hill Country Region PCA at last weeks school. They have 1 more planned this year.
Greetings Heroes!

Things are a little crazy this week in Louisville KY where the Operations Center for Tire Rack Street Survival International (aka my house) is located. There's a little annual event here in town the first Saturday every May called the Kentucky Derby and it's this coming Saturday. Residents and ten's of thousands of visitors in Louisville have spent the last 2 weeks preparing for this 2 minute horse race. We've had a huge 25+ minute fireworks party to kick it off ( check it out www.youtube.com), airshow, parades, hot air balloon races, steam boat races, marathon races (of the people variety) etc... everybody becomes a expert on handicapping horses, which is the best bourbon for a mint julip, where to get the biggest hat, the best cigar and on and on and on...... meanwhile we've had a busy week and will have a busier weekend ahead. We added 4 schools, and will host 2 schools on Saturday and 4 on Sunday!

Adrian Sultana has opened a school for the Genesee Valley Chapter of the BMW CCA for a school in October at a new location in Danville, NY. They had been holding them in the paddock of my favorite race track in the US, Watkins Glen, but alas that won't work this time. Since they didn't host last year or the year before, this will qualify for +1=2x$ incentive dollars. Thanks Adrian and team! 👏

Dan Gurney let us know that the Arizona Border Region of the SCCA will host their annual school that same day in October but a little further away in Tucson, AZ. They have been hosting since 2011 and this one will be lucky 13! Thanks to all involved!! 👏👏

The Atlanta Region of the SCCA will host their annual school in early June. David Nolan has the "bit in his mouth" (sorry horse racing reference) and is getting the team ready for a Hampton GA event. Since they didn't host last year, this will qualify for +1=2x$ incentive dollars. Thanks all! 👏👏👏

And Thursday Nick Dunlap said that the Central Florida Region of the SCCA will host a school in September in Coco FL. It's been 10 YEARS since this region has hosted! It obviously qualifies for +1=2x$ incentive dollars! Thanks to all stepping up to help save our most vulnerable drivers and making the roads safer for all of us! Well done!👏👏👏

🚗 Last Weekend’s Action -

The Indianapolis Region of the SCCA hosted their annual event at the Lincoln Technical College. This is the 3rd in a row at that location. Thanks to all involved!! 👏

The Hill Country Region of the PCA held their 12th school in their 10 years of hosting outside of Austin. Circle of Excellence inductee Class of 2017 Lenny Zwik lead the charge again! 👏

From last weekend's event in Kyle TX. PCA National Coordinator Rob Price got his firetruck shined up and used it to water the skid pad and used it for the blind spot demo. Thanks to all!🏅

💰 Don't forget to take advantage of the +1=2x$ campaign. Add 1 school to what you did last year and get double the return in sponsorship dollars! NOTE: The additional schools must have a student enrollment of 15 students to qualify for the additional amount. If the 15 student limit is not reached, the standard amount will be provided.

🚗 This Weekend’s Action - 6 schools!

Sparks, NV - The Reno Region of the SCCA under the leadership of the amazing Carol Deborde (Circle of Excellence inductee inaugural Class of 2014) will have their 1st of 2 schools. This will be their 24th school. They started in 2007, one of the 1st SCCA regions to host!

Rosemount, MN - The North Star Chapter BMW CCA is hosting their 3rd school of the year! They start off in the cold of January (February this year) and host again before all the snow is gone. This is their 'normal' weather school. A high of 67 sounds better than what they had for their 1st 2 schools! Thanks to last years Circle of Excellence inductee Tracy Rolf and crew!!

Canfield, OH - The unstoppable Sandi Kryder does not let the low student numbers stop the Mahoning Valley Region SCCA from saving lives. A single digit school is no deterrent. Thanks to Sandi and her dedicated team!

Salem, VA - A 20 student SOLD OUT! school awaits the Blue Ridge PCA Region for a school on Sunday. Last years Circle of Excellence inductee Marc Wilson has the crew primed and ready. Another mid 60's day is forecasted. Great job all!

Rome, NY - Last years Circle of Excellence inductee (see a pattern here?) Dennis Hesse is facing a single digit school as well but determined to save some lives. His Central New York PCA Region I'm sure is 'up in the saddle' (sorry horse racing reference again) and ready to go! Strong work all!

Franklin, NC - The Highland Sport Car Club, currently our only Independent club hosting our program. with a assist from the Tarheel Chapter of the BMW CCA, will do their annual school this weekend. They were 1 seat away from a sell out! Thanks to Krystal Pereira and all involved!

🔺 Let's remember why we are doing this folks:

56 teens have died this week since the last time you read this update!

Many have said that Street Survival is the most rewarding thing you can do in a car club. Everyone knows a teenager—a family member, neighbor, co-worker—who needs this program. You’ll be sharing the road with them. Let's make them safer to make you safer!

💬 And Now This .........

from a recent in-class survey, What did you like best? -

Liked best - student. How everyone was so upbeat and nice. Everyone was also very knowledgeable and fun. Everything was pretty great. Dan S.

Like best - parent. Enjoyed watching my daughter learn and handle her car and engage in discussions with the instructors. Ted J.

that's why we do it folks!!!

Let's see some smiling faces! SEND US PICTURES PLEASE!! Candid shots of your students interacting with each other, their parents, checking tire pressures, sitting in class.....
