EXTREME HAIL THREAT TONIGHT — Here’s what I’m watching closely.

Severe thunderstorms are expected to roll in this evening, and some of the hail could be damaging — the kind we haven’t seen in years. The Storm Prediction Center has highlighted our region with a rare “hatched” risk zone, meaning hail over 2 inches in diameter is possible. That’s golf ball to even tennis ball size — more than enough to dent cars, crack windows, or cause serious injury.

This isn’t your typical spring storm.

“This is the kind of hail that gets your attention,” said WYFF 4 Chief Meteorologist Chris Justus. “It’s the largest threat we’ve seen in quite some time, and it could do real damage.”

The greatest threat for large hail and strong winds comes later this evening into the overnight hours — especially east of I-85 and into the foothills of the Carolinas. While the tornado risk remains low, it’s not zero.

What you should do:
• Have a safe place to shelter tonight — away from windows
• Move your car to cover if you can
• Turn on alerts on your phone — I’ll be tracking it all live

If you hear loud thuds or damage overnight, it may not be a branch — it could be hail. I’ll be here watching it all closely, with the latest.
