The first twelve months behind the wheel are the riskiest a driver will ever have. Not because new drivers are careless, but because nothing is automatic yet.

Five habits we drill until they are:

✅ Three seconds back. Pick a fixed object ahead. Reach it before you finish counting to three and you're too close. Double it in rain.

✅ Scan your mirrors. Every five to eight seconds, so nothing appears out of nowhere.

✅ Phone away. Not face down, not in the cupholder. Somewhere you'd have to stop the car to reach it.

✅ Pause on green. A green light means the signal changed, not that the intersection is clear.

✅ Check blind spots. Mirror, shoulder, then move. Same order, every lane change.

None of these require talent or fast reflexes. They require repetition, which is exactly what training is for.

🚦 School zones are about to be busy again.
New drivers in your house? The first weeks back are exactly when teens face the stuff they've never practiced — school-zone speed changes, buses stopping without warning, packed parking lots, and other teens who are just as new at this.
Our Class D teen program is 14 hours total: one 8-hour classroom day plus three 2-hour behind-the-wheel drives, scheduled around school and sports. Students have up to 6 months to finish.

🚗 The right way to set your parking brake (and protect your transmission):

Many drivers make the mistake of putting the vehicle in Park first and then setting the parking brake. That causes the weight of the vehicle to rest on the small parking pawl inside your transmission instead of the parking brake.

Here’s the correct order:

✅ Keep your foot firmly on the brake.
✅ Shift the vehicle into Neutral.
✅ Apply the parking brake.
✅ Slowly release the brake pedal to let the parking brake hold the vehicle.
✅ Press the brake again, then shift into Park.
✅ Turn the vehicle off.

This simple habit takes just a few extra seconds and helps reduce stress on your transmission, especially when parking on hills.

💡 Bonus tip: Always use your parking brake—even on flat ground. It keeps the vehicle secure and helps prevent unnecessary wear on the transmission.
