Tech Tip Tuesday!
This week's tip is for all the new racers and faces we've been seeing at the track. Whether it's your first trip to Island Dragway or you've been racing for years, it's always good to review how a race day works from start to finish.
When you arrive, you'll see several signs before reaching the gate. The most important are the "DON'T BLOCK THE BRIDGE" signs. Island Road is a two-lane road used by local residents, farmers, track staff, and emergency vehicles. Blocking the bridge can delay racing and create problems if emergency access is needed.
After paying at the gate, racers will receive a tech sheet. Please fill it out before heading to tech inspection. Pens are available at the tech building if needed. Have your driver's license and any required safety equipment ready when you enter the tech lanes.
Once your vehicle passes NHRA tech and racing begins, you can head to the staging lanes. Lane assignments are announced over the PA system and posted at the entrance to the lanes.
We typically start with race tires, Pro Tree, and No Time lanes. Bikes, sleds, and junior racers run next, followed by street tire lanes and then race tire lanes. That rotation continues throughout the day unless classes are running or circumstances require adjustments. Cones are used for street tire runs to help preserve track prep.
If it's your first time, let the staging lane staff know. They'll notify the starting line crew, who can help guide you through the staging process. Pay attention to their instructions, you should be able to stage yourself after 2-3 passes.
After your run, make your way through the shutdown area and proceed to the time slip booth. Remember, the return road speed limit is 15 mph, and all pit and staging lane areas are limited to 5 mph.
The staging lanes, bridge area, and along the ditch in lane 15 are not parking areas. If you need to cool your vehicle down, please use an open pit spot. Do not leave vehicles unattended in the staging lanes or anywhere outside the designated pit parking areas.
