Your car can look clean and still be covered in contamination you can't see. π¬
Iron fallout from brake dust, tar from road surfaces, industrial pollution β these particles embed themselves into your clear coat and bond there. A normal wash doesn't touch them. A clay bar removes them. So does a proper chemical decontamination.
Here's why it matters: if you apply a ceramic coating over contaminated paint, you're sealing that contamination underneath the coating permanently. The coating bonds to the contaminants β not to your clear coat β and the result is a coating that won't last as long, won't perform as well, and can't be fixed without removing the whole thing and starting over.
This is why paint decontamination is a required step before every ceramic coating we apply at OCDetailing. And this month it's FREE with every coating booking β a $150β$200 value, on us.
If you've been quoted a ceramic coating somewhere and they didn't mention decontamination, ask about it. The answer tells you everything about the quality of the work you're going to get.
