Around early 1992, something quietly disappeared from Mazda showrooms.

The Silver Miata was gone, discontinued to make way for two new special models. One was yellow. The other was black.

And while yellow tends to announce itself, the Black Miata had a different kind of confidence.
Mazda's own advertising described black as "the very soul of sophistication and style", and looking at the car today, it's easy to see what they meant.

Finished in Brilliant Black with a tan leather interior, matching hood and boot cover, the Black Miata transformed the character of the MX-5. The playful roadster that had won over enthusiasts suddenly felt more mature, more refined, and perhaps a little more expensive than its price tag suggested.

Buyers could take things even further with BBS wheels and Nardi wood trim, details that remain highly desirable among enthusiasts today.

With 4,626 produced, the Black Miata wasn't the rarest special edition Mazda ever built. But it remains one of the most distinctive - proof that sometimes the most effective changes aren't mechanical at all.

Sometimes, it's all about how a car carries itself.

The 1999 10th Anniversary Edition was one of the first signs that the NB was going to be more than just "the Miata without pop-up headlights."

It wasn't special because Mazda painted it blue and bolted on different wheels. It was special because it represented the first time Mazda really pushed the Miata slightly upmarket and more enthusiast-focused from the factory. The six-speed gearbox, Torsen limited-slip differential, Bilstein dampers, and lightweight 15-inch wheels weren't just options; they were the sort of upgrades owners were actively seeking out because they made a great chassis feel even sharper and more rewarding.

Limited to 7,500 examples worldwide, the 10AE was one of the first Miatas to feel genuinely collectible from day one. Not because it was rare, but because it felt like Mazda had built the car enthusiasts would have specified themselves.

More than 25 years later, it's still one of the most recognisable and sought-after special editions ever produced.

The 1991 Special Edition marked the first time Mazda gave the MX-5 a more curated identity.

Finished exclusively in British Racing Green with a tan leather interior, tan tonneau cover, and Nardi wood details, it leaned heavily into the classic British roadster formula that inspired the Miata in the first place. But this was not nostalgia for nostalgia’s sake. It was Mazda proving just how well the MX-5 could wear a more premium, heritage-focused specification.

Limited to just 4,000 numbered examples, the Special Edition introduced details that made the car feel more complete without changing the formula underneath. Stainless sill plates, headrest speakers, cruise control, air conditioning, and a CD player brought a level of equipment rarely associated with lightweight sports cars of the era.

What made the 1991 Special Edition important was how intentional it felt. Mazda understood early on that the MX-5 appealed to enthusiasts emotionally as much as dynamically. The BRG color scheme, wood accents, and tailored interior transformed the car’s personality while keeping the same lightweight balance and simplicity that made the NA generation so successful.

Today, the 1991 Special Edition holds a unique place in Miata history. It was the beginning of Mazda experimenting with exclusivity, themed specifications, and limited-run models that would later define some of the most collectible MX-5s ever produced.

Here is the next installment of our Miata Calendar pages, featuring a 2024 ND Club.

Alo Sarv said that when he purchased this roadster in 2024, he's been "hooked on autocrossing and tracks ever since", heading to his first autocross even just two weeks "after driving it off the showroom floor".

He's made a few upgrades,

including a Karcepts front sway bar, Koni Yellow shocks, and Bridgestone RE-71RS tires on Avanti Storm S7 wheels. At the time of submission, Alo said that, "Just last weekend, I put down the fastest time in my class of 30 cars at my local autocross event with 30+ people."

The Mazda MX-5 Miata ND marked a return to first principles, refined for a modern era.

Introduced in 2015, the ND was developed under Mazda’s “Jinba Ittai” philosophy, reinforcing the connection between car and driver while stripping away unnecessary weight and complexity. After the larger and more comfort-focused NC, this generation brought the MX-5 back to a sharper, more focused footprint.

This was not reinvention for its own sake. It was a reset.

Built on a new lightweight SKYACTIV chassis, the ND delivered a significant reduction in mass compared to its predecessor, immediately transforming responsiveness and agility. The structure was stiffer, the steering more direct, and the overall feel more immediate from the moment you turn the wheel.

Engine options evolved too, with efficient SKYACTIV-G units tuned specifically for linear, usable power rather than outright figures. The result was a car that prioritised balance, feedback, and engagement over specification sheet dominance.

What defined the ND was its clarity of purpose. Compact proportions returned, driving position was improved, and the focus on minimal distraction gave the driver a more connected experience than ever before in a modern MX-5.

What many overlook is how significant this generation was in re-establishing the MX-5 as a benchmark for lightweight sports cars in the modern era. It proved that simplicity, when carefully engineered, still had a place in a world moving toward complexity.

Today, the ND stands as the purest expression of the modern MX-5 philosophy. Lightweight, accessible, and built around the driver above all else.

More than an update, it was a reaffirmation of everything the MX-5 was always meant to be.
