The Mazda Miata had already won the SCCA Showroom Stock C championship. Mazda's answer was the R Package, a version built to bring that track pedigree onto the street.

The changes were all about handling, not power. Bilstein shocks, stiffer sway bars, retuned springs and a Torsen limited slip differential sharpened the chassis, while a front air dam and rear spoiler gave it a more purposeful look. Output stayed at 128 horsepower, the same as any other 1994 Miata.

Mazda's ad campaign leaned into the racing connection, referencing the RX-7's RX designation to joke that the R Package was rated "R" for racy.

Today, R Package NAs are some of the most sought-after first-generation Miatas, prized for the exact combination of chassis upgrades and rarity that set them apart in 1994.

Which R Package spec would you want on your Miata? The Torsen diff, the suspension, or the aero kit?

Laguna Blue NA Miata đź’™

For 1994 and 1995, Mazda offered the NA Miata in Laguna Blue. Buyers could pair it with the tan interior as an option, but standard black cloth was just as common, and it's the tan cars that tend to get remembered.

The tan interior changes the feel of the cabin completely. Against the simple, compact shape of the NA, it gives the car a slightly more grown-up look without losing any of its character. The black interior, by contrast, keeps things closer to the sportier, no-nonsense read most people associate with the early MX-5.

What makes Laguna Blue interesting either way is how well the colour suits the NA's original design. With the roof down, the blue bodywork sits well against tan or black, while the pop-up headlights, small dimensions and clean lines keep it unmistakably early MX-5.

It's also a good example of why factory spec sheets matter on older cars. Two Laguna Blue examples from the same year can look and feel quite different depending on which interior was ticked, and spotting that kind of detail is part of what separates a casual glance from actually knowing the car.

It's 2006 and the Miata's third generation arrives the same year the PlayStation 3 launches to lines around the block, Nintendo's Wii has people waving their arms around living rooms everywhere, and Dunkin' Donuts overtakes Starbucks as America's favorite coffee stop. The NC was bigger and heavier than its predecessors, and purists had opinions.

But underneath the new shape was the same idea: even weight distribution, a chassis built to talk to the driver, and nothing there that didn't need to be. Twenty years on, plenty of NCs are still doing exactly what they were built for.

NC owners, what won you over?

There was a time when Mazda had to convince people that the Miata was the return of the classic roadster. This 1992 ad makes a pretty good case for it.

“Top-down driving,” winding roads, a tuned exhaust, a short-throw shifter, and a 1.6-liter engine. The pitch was simple: find a good road and go drive.

Then there’s the car itself: bright yellow, pop-up headlights, tiny proportions, and the classic NA lines. It looks exactly like the kind of car that would turn a quick drive into an afternoon with nowhere particular to be!

The ad calls it a “second golden age” for the roadster. More than three decades later, the NA Miata is still one of the cars people point to when they talk about simple, affordable sports cars done right.
Not a bad prediction for 1992. đź’›

British Racing Green with a tan interior. 3,000 built. Even by Miata special edition standards, the 2001 SE is a moment.

Mazda draped it in BRG paint with a tan top and tan leather seats, then finished the cabin with a Nardi wood steering wheel, matching wood shift k**b, and wood hand brake handle. 16" polished alloys, a Bose stereo, cruise control, A/C, and remote entry rounded it out. Under the hood: the 1.8L with a 6-speed manual and Torsen limited slip diff.

Only 3,000 made, each one numbered. It's still one of the most sought-after NB special editions out there, and it's easy to see why.

British racing heritage never looked this good on an American roadster. Which era of Miata SE is your favorite?

Every Miata owner has one: a stretch of road they think about more than they'd probably admit; the one they'd choose over any other if today was the only day left to drive it.

Maybe it's twenty minutes from home and you've driven it a hundred times. Maybe it's somewhere you only get to once a year. Either way, you know exactly which corner is which.

That's the whole point of this car. It was never built to get you somewhere fast. It was built to make you want the long way round.

Tell us yours. Where's the one road you'd pick, every time?

You know you own a Miata when every mechanic you meet has a story about their own.

When you've timed how fast you can get the top down and back up before it starts pouring.

When "is that a Miata?" gets asked at every single gas stop.

When you've been asked if it's a kit car more times than you can count.

Finish the sentence. You know you own a Miata when...
