1968 Corvette ZL-1 Zora Duntov test mule Serial #00007 in progress, we are getting close to finishing the fantastic restoration. 2 more months she should be ready for its first test ride here in Phoenix Arizona. looking just as it did when shown to the limited press in late February 1969 here in Arizona at Mel Larson’s raceway in Wickenburg. A few magazine photographers were invited. This small event would end up months later getting coverage in upcoming articles!
We are excited to show the Corvette World a piece of Zora & Gib’s R&D work at its finest on the C3’s.
One of its many extraordinary pieces of history is the highest horse power ZL-1/LT-2 454 cubic inch extremely rare priority oiling Can-Am/Corvette EXP Engine block with the O- special freeze plug heads, first set of ZL-1 exp heads. 2 engines were built this way for this car. There were a total of (4) built A,B,C,D

My 1968 ZL-1/LT-2 Duntov Development Engineering mule serial #00007 we made some great progress on Oct 3rd we installed the body on the completed rolling development chassis! Engine is all tuned ready to run! Very excited about finishing this great piece of C-3 Corvette Development history! What a car, we have everything here ready to install. So a few more months it will be completed! The FIA approved 42 gallon fuel tank setup is just too cool. Too see this car at an event in real life is going to be amazing and a great treat for the public. I just wish Zora’s right hand man Gib H. Would have lived to see it restored. He had a lot to do with the work done on this car through the years it was used internally.
Yes thats the real 1 of 1 1965 427 Alloy Super Cheetah on the rack behind it.

The Most Powerful Car In America (Magazine) quote In 1969.
This Duntov Mule has the most incredible history of extreme performance up grades throughout its usage in CEC for 5-1/2 years. This feat is unprecedented for a single prototype in Duntov’s stable of fabulous text Corvettes!

Michael is my youngest son here in my shop ready to go to work. He loves working on cars already. What he don’t realize yet in life he is standing next to the most significant C3 Corvette. My 1968 Serial #00007 Prototype Development Corvette convertible we have started the complete restoration on. It is one of Zora Duntov’s internal test cars.
Built new as a prototype, bird cage has no green zinc primer, chassis has prototype frame rails and welds are different than production frames. It also has bolt In cross member rear frame stiffener’s and special L88 ZL-1 LT-2 High Horse Power rear end cross member.
Body is 2X and my internal build schedule documents show this corvette to be the First convertible 427 prototype built. Very interesting is the fact there are no rocker molding brackets suspended off the lower bird cage, this in fact is evidence of it having side exhaust!
Zora just appointed Chief Engineer of the Corvettes, drafts a document June of 67 ordering the first (2) Convertibles built that are available for driving on the test track, a 327 serial #00002 and a 427 serial #00007 for his evaluation. Both cars are Body in White prototypes at this point. Both cars have hard tops. Zora tested them at the Milford proving grounds July 67.
Both cars had many issues that needed to be rectified so they were ordered to be sent back for many engineering changes to get done for the purpose of making the production line changes.
In essence Zora wanted Corvette line to be more refined and produce better quality corvette’s.
Both cars would end up getting upgraded engineering changes at the St.Louis plant and both were released very late in relation to there serial numbers on Oct 27th 1967.
Serial #00002 was shipped to Jack Royeton Chevrolet-Cadillac Sturgis Mich and was leased out for (1) year to a VIP.
#00007 was shipped to Miller Chevrolet Grand Haven, Mich. Where Zora had picked it up for use as his test bed vehicle for nearly 5 years. Going through many high performance drive line and suspension changes. Plus model year appearance changes. FIA upgrades.
This is where the story begins.
Serial number 00001 & 00004 have (No) delivery status outside GM. Gone forever!
The rest of the small group of pilot cars were released from St. Louis on July 26th 1967. For press and internal media.
Most of these early pilot cars are still missing and not accounted for.

Featured Display Vehicle Spotlight // 1968 CHEVROLET CORVETTE NART CAR- The Rebel

Completed the 1972 24 Hours of Le Mans, finished in NART livery. For all its racing victories, though, there was one thing The Rebel could not do: compete at Le Mans. It did not qualify; rules stated that any GT-class entrants had to use a majority of factory parts or original-style equipment.

1968 Development car earliest ZL-1 test car! Great news for C3 Corvette history. I purchased a 1968 Corvette Convertible development car that was used internally for almost 5 years. Engineering internal ID number is listed as a Prototype number on the first production schedule for build date and options. CC to Zora Duntov documents. It is #00007 serial number and built as body in White 427 roadster with hard top and power brakes & Side exhaust body, yes not in production until 1969. I found a number on the passenger firewall when cleaning body underside it has a 2 X
And according to the earliest 68 pretest and prototype cars built many months before production it is 2nd roadster body built or 1st 427 roadster built.
This Development car one of ZAD’s cars was used for high speed and the highest horsepower engines built at the time. It’s appearance changed to a 69 then a 70 then 72 internally before being sold to an employee.
I have been researching all 1968-69-70 Development cars for many years.
I am not aware of another 1968 Development car used so extensively inside R&D and CEC. also having a unique chassis with Duntov modifications done to it. We just located some of the original white paint from the first body in White paint job. The original factory serial id tag and rivets are on the windshield frame, the chassis numbers are intact also. Car was white, Yellow,White then Black with ZL-1 hood still white. Car is under going full restoration at Auxier’s Garage! I have been into Corvettes for over 45 years and have never seen one of these Zora Development cars in real life before this car. First public record is July 14th 1973 of this serial number. My Birthday happens to be on July 14th, this very rare vett found me for a reason. I welcome any knowledge pertaining to Zora’s 1968 427 HD White convertible Development cars, info, pictures, GM employees that worked at the Engineering service garage that worked on this car.
