What helps: stay out of the lane directly behind a loaded truck, and give yourself more following distance than feels necessary. A rock at 75 mph carries a lot more energy than one at 45.

Windshields are laminated — two layers of glass with plastic between, so they crack and hold together.

Back glass is tempered. When it fails it turns into thousands of pebbles instantly, usually all over your back seat, your cargo area, and every vent and seat rail in the car.

We replace it and we clean up the glass. All of it. That second part is most of the work.

Car's been in the sun. Glass is 150°. You get in, crank the AC to max, and aim it at the windshield.

That thermal shock is what turns a stable chip into an 18-inch crack in about four seconds.

Start the AC on low, aimed at the floor. Give it a minute. Then point it up.

In July it's hot all day and hot all night. In October we get 95° afternoons and 60° nights — a 35-degree swing in twelve hours.

Glass expands and contracts with that swing. Any existing chip is a weak point, and that's where it gives.

Every fall we get a wave of calls that all start the same way: "It was fine yesterday."
