🔧 REBELS REPAIRS — WHY DOES A BASIC DIAGNOSTIC COST $150? 🔧
We occasionally hear:
“$150 just to diagnose it?”
That’s a fair question. So here’s what actually goes into modern automotive diagnostics.
Our professional diagnostic scanner cost approximately $6,000 when purchased.
Then there’s another $1,200–$1,500 every year just to keep that scanner updated so it can communicate with newer cars, trucks, computers and modules.
And that’s only the beginning.
Modern vehicles often require access to manufacturer/dealership-level software, which means additional subscriptions, licensing and specialized interfaces.
A few examples:
Ford / Lincoln — FDRS, IDS, FJDS
GM / Chevy / GMC / Buick / Cadillac — Techline Connect, GDS2, SPS2
Chrysler / Dodge / Jeep / Ram — wiTECH
Toyota / Lexus — Techstream / GTS+
Honda / Acura — i-HDS / HDS
Nissan / Infiniti — CONSULT
Subaru — SSM4
Mazda — MDARS
Hyundai / Kia / Genesis — GDS / KDS
Volkswagen / Audi — ODIS
BMW / MINI — ISTA
Mercedes-Benz — XENTRY
Volvo — VIDA
Jaguar / Land Rover — SDD / Pathfinder
Porsche — PIWIS
Tesla — Toolbox
And that’s still not everything.
💰 The equipment, subscriptions, software, training and information required to properly diagnose today’s vehicles add up FAST.
Plugging a scanner into your car and reading a trouble code isn’t a diagnosis.
A code tells a technician where to start looking.
Actual diagnostics can require live-data analysis, wiring diagrams, electrical testing, bidirectional controls, module communication, technical service information and sometimes manufacturer-specific software.
That’s why our basic diagnostic is $150.
It’s not because we’re trying to be expensive.
It’s because today’s vehicles are dramatically more complicated than the cars and trucks our dads and grandparents worked on.
Your vehicle may have dozens of computers communicating with each other. Having the right equipment—and knowing how to interpret what that equipment is telling you—is what separates diagnosing a problem from guessing at one.
There are some great mobile mechanics out there.
But when you’re choosing who works on your vehicle, don’t be afraid to ask:
“What diagnostic equipment and information do you have access to?”
Not every “mobile guy” invests in this level of equipment, software and knowledge.
We do.
