Up next at Shorty’s Garage is a complete rebuild on a Gen V LT engine.

What started out as a cam swap quickly turned into a much bigger job after finding damaged cam bearings and main bearings during teardown.

Rather than just throwing a new cam in and calling it good, we’re going through the entire engine to make sure everything is right.

We’ll be sharing pictures and updates throughout the rebuild, all the way to the first startup.

When was the last time you had your brakes checked?

I’ve been doing quite a few brake jobs lately at Shorty’s Garage. Some of the pads and rotors I’ve pulled off were definitely past due for replacement.

If your brakes are squeaking, grinding, vibrating, or just don’t feel right, shoot me a message. We handle pads, rotors, calipers, and other brake repairs.

Got a newer vehicle with an electronic parking brake? No problem! We have the diagnostic equipment needed to put electronic brake systems into service mode so repairs can be done properly.

We recently purchased a used vehicle for the shop, and you better believe we brought our diagnostic equipment with us.

Our professional diagnostic equipment allows us to go far beyond a basic check-engine light scan. We can scan individual modules throughout the vehicle, check for stored and pending trouble codes, look at available diagnostic history, and identify potential issues that might not be obvious during a test drive.

We can even check emissions readiness monitors for signs that codes may have recently been cleared.

Went camping this weekend with my daughter and borrowed a family member’s vehicle. On the way to the campground, the car shut off and locked up while doing about 80 mph on the highway. We figured it out and got it running again. Ended up finding a ground wire hanging on for dear life, causing an intermittent connection.

Up late working on this 79 Caddy. We suspected the firing order at the distributor was wrong.

We verified cylinder #1 was on the compression stroke, brought it to top dead center, then checked the distributor rotor position.

Our suspicion was right, the plug wires are configured in the wrong firing order.

A lot of people keep asking us if we install remote starts and car alarm systems. Yes, we do.

For these installs, we recommend Compustar.

They’re not the cheapest systems on the market, but this is one of those areas where you really do get what you pay for. Depending on the vehicle and setup, Compustar can offer remote start, 2-way remotes, smartphone control, GPS tracking, shock and tilt sensors, starter-kill features, secure push-to-start protection, and PIN/touchpad options.

With the amount of vehicle theft happening around the Chicagoland area, especially with cars like Hellcats, S**t Packs, Camaros, Chargers, Challengers and other high-theft vehicles, adding another layer of protection beyond the factory system can be well worth it.

These systems aren’t just about making noise when somebody breaks a window. They can be set up to alert you when the vehicle is being tampered with, help prevent the vehicle from being started, and give you additional control and tracking options from your phone.
