***ALERT*** Purchasing Vehicles advertised on craigs list and facebook market place.

Over the past few months we have had multiple customers come in with vehicles they purchased that were advertised on facebook market place and craigs list, that we were unable to process. Many of these sales are actually illegal.

If you do purchase a vehicle advertised on these sites you can take certain steps to protect yourself.

First and foremost , make sure the person selling you the vehicle is the actual person listed as owner on the title. You should even ask to see ID. If the vehicle is less than 7 years old(2017 or newer) you should get a notarized bill of sale.

If the person selling the vehicle is not listed as the owner, most likely they are wholesaler. Wholesalers are only allowed to sell vehicles to other dealers. Only a licensed RETAIL dealer can sell to the general public. Many wholesalers get around this issue by reassigning the vehicle to an out of state dealer. The seller generally will provide the buyer with a bill of sale from an out of state dealer. Most common bills of sale are from West Virginia and Georgia.

Many of theses bills of sale are fraudulent and from dealers that no longer exist. The Maryland MVA is cracking down on these types of sales. They have put out a list of fraudulent dealers and will not accept these transactions.

The best way to protect yourself is meet the seller at a reputable, licensed tag and title agency and have them check the title and paper work. You can always call us at 240-361-4499 if you have questions about purchasing vehicles from private parties.

Did you know that Maryland is one of the only “two title” states in the country? What does two title mean?
In most states when you purchase a vehicle that is being financed, the lien holder(financial institution) receives the title from the DMV/MVA. Once the vehicle is paid off the lien holder release the lien and mails the title to the owner.
In Maryland, the owner/buyer of the vehicle receives the title from the MVA. The lien holder is listed on the bottom half of the title. The lien holder receives a separate document called a Security Interest Filing. This is why Maryland is referred to as a “two title” state. Once the vehicle is paid off, the lien holder signs off on the Security Interest Filing and mails it to the owner. These two documents constitute a clear title.
