Why aural tuning ...? The School of Piano Tec

hnology for the Blind is specially designed and well equipped for the teaching of piano tuning, servicing, and rebuilding. A graduation requirement for all technicians at the school is to thoroughly master all aspects of tuning, from unisons through temperament to the entire keyboard, along with regulation and repair skills. All students were trained to tune “aurally”, which is a rare trait in today’s electronics dependent society. Aural tuning is a method where the tuner uses tuning fork to tune a string to one note, then tune the other strings based on that note. There are 3 legs to the tuning method which uses only a tuning fork, and the technician’s ears. This is why so few tuners are aural tuners. Though the technology of expensive electronic tuning devices have significantly improved recently, the machine cannot replace a well trained ear. Electronic tuners “listen” to the frequencies of the piano strings and adjust the strings until the spinner of the electronic tuning device indicates the correct frequency. This may expedite the process, but for a truly excellent tuning, the piano technician should be able to aurally tune the piano and only use a machine as an aid.

“I have my piano, a Yamaha upright, tuned regularly. I decided to try Michelle because of her aural tuning method. The difference in outcome between the aural tuning and electronic device tuning was quite noticeable and pleasing. In addition, Michelle treated the piano with obvious care and respect. I will certainly use Michelle’s Melody in the future, and will recommend Michelle to family and friends.”

今年度のJET プログラムに選ばれた日本語学校生徒さんに祝福を。。

㊗️Congratulations to being selected for 2019/2020 JET Program Ms. Frances Rijo!!!

~Journey to Japan~

“My journey to the JET program all started two years ago when I ran into my good friend/childhood neighbor, Shaun Adams. He told me how excited he was to have been accepted to the program and start his life in Japan as a teacher. I was so impressed and happy for him! I thought to myself, "I would love to do something like that...", especially because I love culture and languages. So, I transitioned from salary job in Marketing and started substitute teaching in local elementary, middle, and high schools in my area. I also started teaching English online to Chinese students and that is when I realized I wanted to be an ESL Teacher. I was always interested in Japanese culture, due to it's rich history and beautiful traditions, so I decided to try to learn the language, which is when I discovered Jacksonville Japanese School (JJS). From the moment I attended my first trial class, up until today, I am greeted with such a warm welcome and look forward to saying "おはようございます!" when I walk through the doors of the school! After a 6 month application process for the JET program, I was finally notified of my acceptance! I couldn't have done it without the positive encouragement and げんき spirit of my family, friends, and everyone at JJS! I am forever grateful for this opportunity with JET and the chance to become a part of the Jacksonville Japanese community :)”
