Up in the Texas Panhandle, a lake sits inside walls of burning red canyon streaked with white stone. The rock around it is about 300 million years old, and the skies overhead are some of the darkest in the country.

There’s a difference between hunting Panhandle whitetails and sitting over a feeder waiting on one.

Around Lake Meredith, especially on the public ground, you’re dealing with breaks, draws, rimrock, changing thermals and a damn wind that rarely does exactly what the forecast said it would.

And there’s no baiting inside Lake Meredith National Recreation Area.

That makes finding the right buck a lot more about actually hunting him—figuring out where he’s bedding, where he’s crossing those breaks, and where you can get in without blowing the whole damn thing up.

Archery season is open now.

Texas hunting licenses for the 2026–27 season are officially on sale, and that means one thing:

Fall is almost here.

From dove season in September through teal, ducks, geese, quail, turkey, whitetail, mule deer and Panhandle pheasant season — some of the best months of the year in the Texas Panhandle are right around the corner.

And for our Veterans and Active-Duty Military, don’t forget the special Youth/Veterans Waterfowl Weekend before the regular High Plains duck season opens.

🏹 ARCHERY SEASON IS HERE.

General season is coming, and mule deer opens back up the week before Thanksgiving.

Mule deer weekends are already filling up, so if you can hunt during the week, do it. Less pressure, fewer orange vests, better opportunity.

We hunt this country too. The cabins and The Lodge were built with hunters in mind, and if you stay with us, we’ll point you in the right direction.

From hunting deer, quail, pheasant and other game during designated seasons to fishing for walleye, bass, crappie and catfish, Lake Meredith National Recreation Area offers a variety of ways to enjoy the outdoors.

Hunting at Lake Meredith has specific seasons, bag limits and park regulations. Before heading out, make sure you have the appropriate Texas hunting license and review current park regulations, season dates and the hunting map: https://www.nps.gov/lamr/planyourvisit/hunting.htm

🎣 Planning to fish? A Texas fishing license is required, but there is no additional Lake Meredith entrance or fishing fee.
