Scarlett is temporarily a Spanish motivational van. "Can I do this?" "SI!"

It's time for a change. Ten years has passed since I started SIN motolabs, and a lot has happening in-between. I thought it would be good to start with removing the decals from the van; and in some senses the vinyl removal experience is like life. Some huge pieces pull easily, others require tedious picking away at the tiny individual scraps, and then sometimes just when you've got a large piece going really well, it breaks, and you end up punching yourself in the face and a bloody lip.

What's next? Ironically, after spending hundreds of hours scouring the web for a specific look for the house, I think I may be heading into home decor. I've got some designs in my head that need to be refined but I think they are marketable. Two materials I've come to love and adore are concrete and wood, so those will be interesting learning experiences for me; I've always been more at home with metal.

But first I've got to get the house ready for final inspection. I think 2-3 weeks and I'll be done. Love to all. More later!

George has been recovering fabulously this week. We’ve been doing slow on leash walks morning and evening, which have been hard for him, but we settled into a routine of stopping to smell _everything_. He hasn’t touched his stitches at all, which is surprising given there are twenty metal staples along his abdomen. The hardest thing for him is the lack of social interaction with other dogs. He’s desperate to run and play like normal. Only another ten days and we get the staples removed. He’s such a good boy, and I feel like we are closer than ever. He makes me laugh so hard with his antics; always quick to sneakily steal a roll of masking tape, or chase the end of the shop broom. Love him so much!

I think a lot of the time we take for granted how brilliant our brains are. All these complex calculations running in real time about the roller’s speed, pressure, weight, amount of sealant, its flow characteristics. How quickly that wet edge is drying, feathering the next section, maintaining a uniform texture, navigating corners, rolling out a uniform five mil across multiple rooms, etc., etc. It’s really quite remarkable. 🧠🤯

After the primer, I switched to a semi gloss, which actually turned out more like a gloss, so I’m now rolling out a matte finish. (The distributor of the Westcoat product recommend I do a semi gloss layer before the matte, as the matte adheres much better to semi gloss finish than the straight primer. But if the semi gloss finished looked good, I would’ve stopped there.)

This is the first coat and it looks great so far, but took all day to dry, about 10 hours. Which is a little different from the manufacturers 4 to 8 hour estimate. Oh well. What’s one more day? 🤪

Preparation for sealing the concrete floors has been an arduous event. When the Gyp-Crete guys showed up early to pour, I had not done a full vacuum of the house. I didn’t think it would be a big deal, but it turned out to be a cluster f**k. All the tiny wood shavings, pine-needles, and other detritus got mixed in with the concrete, and then floated to the surface. I didn’t see this until we started to surface dress the concrete and suddenly the floor was covered in imperfections that were embedded in the concrete. So I spent a week on my hands and knees with a dental pick removing every piece, then filling the holes with concrete repair liquid, and then sanding back down.

I just couldn’t imagine looking at the floor for the next 20 years and seeing those pine-needles; that would’ve driven me insane.

So eventually, I got to the point where I could use acetone to clean the surface prior to sealing. The primer coat went on the well, but it was a steep learning curve with this product, and getting consistent coverage over the whole floor. It doesn’t look great this morning, but I have enough sealer topcoat for three more coats so hopefully that’ll even out the inconsistencies of my application. Fingers crossed.🤞🏻

Really pleased with how the arbor turned out. I didn’t quite stick to my original design. Physically standing up there and seeing how high I needed to put the privacy slats changed the design. And I also had a few boards that were too cupped/warped, so had to reconfigure the final layout. I’ll wait a few weeks for the wood to dry out then have someone paint it white for me.

I’ve got a couple of big L-shaped sectional couches picked out and a mobile bar bookmarked. I think we’ll be using this space quite frequently. I do need to research outdoor mats as the black EPDM roofing gets wicked hot in the sun. Too hot for bare feet/paws!

Mug of tea for scale. 😆

Another epic progress day! Focused on completing the arbor today. And got into a delightfully methodical system for installing the horizontal privacy slats. Plus this 4ft section which will be home to the main white clematis plants, that hopefully, will cover the arbor completely in due time.

One of those big progress days. Finished off two walls of siding and started putting together the arbor. Once you’ve ground off some of the slag left over from the CNC plasma torch that cut these steel 6x6 post connectors, and similarly, given the ends of the Sun-Wood PT posts a little trim, everything slides together easily. 🥳

I haven’t posted a picture of George for a while, so here is one of him being supremely patient while I work on the house. He’s such a good boy. ❤️

6:27:50 pm April 23rd 2026. Such pretty light coming into the house tonight. Never saw this before as it’s been subfloor for the last six years, now with the concrete there is a shadow to fawn over.

I’m surface dressing the Gyp-Crete today prior to putting on a primer and sealer epoxy product. It’s slow going but the concrete that is appearing underneath is this lighter warmer color. Not sure if it’ll stay once the sealer is on, but I’m enjoying the look as I progress slowly across the room.

The observant ones among you all will notice that I have a black accent wall now. I was slightly apprehensive about doing this, but now that it’s up there, it really changes the feeling of the room. The matte white was almost too overwhelming, and so having this warm charcoal black to get lost in is perfect.
