Your AC compressor relies on refrigerant oil to lubricate its internal components. That oil circulates through the system whenever the AC runs, coating every seal, bearing and internal surface it passes through. When the system sits unused for months the oil settles to the lowest point in the circuit. The components above the oil line sit dry. The rubber seals throughout the system receive no lubrication and begin to dry out and harden.

Rubber seals need regular contact with refrigerant oil to maintain their flexibility and sealing properties. After a full winter of disuse many seals have hardened and cracked to the point where they can no longer hold pressure. The refrigerant begins leaking past the failed seals before you have even noticed anything is wrong.

The moment you turn the AC on in summer the compressor engages at full load. Internal components that have sat dry for months begin rotating under full demand with no oil film between them. A compressor that engages dry at full load can seize within seconds.

AC compressor replacement costs up to $1,000 in parts and labour. The fix takes fifteen minutes once a month through winter — run the AC on its coldest setting for fifteen minutes to circulate the oil, keep the seals lubricated and maintain pressure throughout the system.
