Did you know that NFL Hall of Famer Art Donovan served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II?

Donovan was born on June 5, 1924, in the Bronx. Donovan received a scholarship to play at Notre Dame University but left to enlist in the Corps in 1943. After completing recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C., Donovan shipped off to the Pacific War. He initially served for 13 months aboard the USS San Jacinto as a an anti-aircraft gunner. Donovan then served with the 3rd Marine Division where he fought in the Battle of Luzon and the Battle of Iwo Jima.

After the war, Donovan resumed college, this time at Boston College, before beginning his NFL career. Donovan was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 1968. Donovan passed away in 2013 at the age of 89. The final resting place for Art Donovan is at the Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens in Timonium, Maryland.
