What Is a CV Joint?
Officially known as a constant velocity joint, a CV joint is a flexible coupling thatās attached to a drive shaft (also called the CV axle), which connects the transmission to a wheel hub. It was originally developed for front-wheel-drive vehicles, where two half-shafts (instead of a solid axle) channel the engineās power to both drive wheels. Theyāre now also used in all-wheel- and rear-wheel-drive vehicles.
Each CV axle includes an outer CV joint attached to a wheel and an inner CV joint connected to the transmission. Both are designed to flex in all directions within a set range to maintain a constant velocity (hence the name) as a vehicle steers or rides over bumps and jolts in the road.
What Is a CV Boot?
A flexible accordion-shaped rubber cover known as a CV boot protects the CV joint and keeps the unitās lubricating grease from oozing out.
What Are the Symptoms of a Bad CV Joint?
CV Boot Cracks or Leaks
If you notice cracks in either of the CV boots and/or spots of leaked grease anywhere within its proximity, itās time to get the vehicle serviced before more serious repairs are required.
Unusual Noises
Clicking, popping, snapping, or clunking sounds, especially while turning the steering wheel, are sure signs of a leaky boot and probably a failing CV joint.
Oscillating Axle
When a CJ joint is deteriorating, youāll feel a distinct wobble while accelerating.
Vibrations or Bouncing
This would be a notch more pronounced than mere wobbling, and it would be prudent to keep the car parked until you can get it in for repairs, again because of the potential risk of a CV joint or axle failing while driving.
How Long Does a CV Joint Last?
If properly maintained, CV joints should last the life of the car. However, the rubber CV boots can wear over time and leak lubricant. Take this as a signal to get the problematic boot replaced immediately, as a contaminated and/or diminished supply of grease can cause the CV joint to wear out and fail, resulting in a much steeper repair cost. Itās also unsafe to drive, as an impaired CV joint can fail at any time, resulting in a potentially dangerous loss of control.
How to Prevent CV Joint Issues
Fortunately, maintaining this critical component requires little more than periodically inspecting the CV boots for cracks or leaks, a procedure most mechanics should perform during regular maintenance visits.
