WTH?!? This BMW M2 race car doesn't have the M2's engine...and that tells you something important about how real race cars are designed.

The road-going BMW M2 uses BMW M's six-cylinder S58.

The BMW M2 Racing uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder based on the BMW B48.
Output: 313 hp.

Why put the smaller engine in the race car?
Because customer racing isn't simply a horsepower contest.

The car has to be durable.
Serviceable.
Affordable enough to operate over an entire season.
Adaptable to different regulations.
And approachable enough for developing drivers and grassroots racers.

BMW even gives the M2 Racing adjustable power management so output can be tailored to different racing classes.

Sometimes engineering a better race car means knowing where not to add more.

BMW built the engine in its 1999 Le Mans winner around a race that was twice as long as Le Mans itself. The BMW V12 LMR only had to survive 24 hours. BMW's engineering target was tougher.

Survive 48 hours.

The six-liter S70/3 V12 was developed around the durability required to cover roughly twice the race distance.

That philosophy mattered.

At Le Mans in 1999, Joachim Winkelhock, Pierluigi Martini and Yannick Dalmas completed 365 laps and gave BMW an overall victory.

That's endurance racing in one idea: Don't build it to survive the race. Build it to survive more than the race can throw at it.
