⬛️🚘 New NC Law: Window Tint Inspection & More
🚔 North Carolina’s new window-tint law is now active as of Dec 1, removing tint checks from the annual vehicle inspection process and adding new steps for drivers during traffic stops.
🚗 The change removes the old $10 tint-testing fee, but all tint laws remain fully in place. Drivers are still responsible for keeping tint within NC’s legal requirements.
🪟 Front windshield tint remains restricted. Only non-reflective tint above the AS-1 line is allowed. Full-windshield tint is illegal unless a driver has an approved medical exemption.
🚘 Front driver and passenger windows must allow 35% or more visible light through (VLT). This rule applies to all vehicles in NC — cars, trucks, and SUVs.
🚙 Sedans / passenger cars must follow the same 35% legal limit on rear side windows and the rear windshield. Cars cannot go darker than the 35% requirement on any window without medical exemption.
🚛 SUVs, vans, and multipurpose vehicles may use darker tint on the rear side windows and windshield, as long as the front two windows meet the 35% requirement. This part of the law has not changed.
✨ NC also limits tint reflectivity. Mirror-like or highly reflective finishes are restricted on both front and rear windows to prevent glare and safety issues.
👮 A new requirement takes effect during police stops: drivers with tinted windows must roll them down when the officer approaches the vehicle. The law does not list penalties for not rolling them down, but officers can still test tint at any time.
⚠️ Law enforcement can continue to stop any vehicle if the tint appears too dark. If the tint does not meet legal standards, citations may be issued and an officer may order the tint removed.
📄 Repeat violations may escalate to a Class III m!sdemeanor, though medically-necessary tint exemptions remain fully valid. Drivers must carry exemption documentation in the vehicle.
📝 While tint inspections are gone, the responsibility is now entirely on drivers to monitor their tint and stay within legal limits based on their vehicle type.
