Why should you have rock-chips on your windshield repaired?

A rock-chip creates a weak spot on your windshield. When the glass expands in the hot sun or when you are defrosting your windshield, the weak area may continue to spread and you will have to replace the glass.

How much will the repair cost me out of pocket?

Most insurance companies cover rock-chip repairs 100%, even if you have a deductible.
Why would they do that?
Your windshield provides a significant amount of strength to the structural support of the vehicle. In a front-end collision the windshield provides up to 45% of the structural integrity of the cabin of the vehicle and in a rollover, up to 60%. The insurance companies do not want you driving with a damaged windshield.

Head-up displays and advanced driver-assistance systems are now offered in a wide variety of vehicles. Even after a customer pays their deductible, the insurance company may have to pay hundreds more for a replacement windshield.

How does the claims process work?

You can call the claims number on your insurance card and tell the representative that you would like to report a glass claim for a rock-chip. Many companies have a simple on-line claims website where you can file your claim, if you prefer.
The insurance company will ask what caused the damage, what date the damage happened and verify that your deductible is waived for the repair!
