📸🚦 Are Red Light Cameras Coming Back to Fayetteville NC Intersections in 2027?
📝 Red-light cameras could return to Fayetteville next year, nearly five years after the city’s previous program ended.
👨🏻💼 City officials are working toward a July 1, 2027 launch of a new automated red-light enforcement program, initially covering 10 intersections. The cameras are NOT active yet, and agreements still must return to City Council for review and approval.
📑 Fayetteville requested proposals earlier this year to operate the system. RedSpeed North Carolina LLC ranked first in the city’s selection process, and staff is now working to finalize contract terms. An updated agreement with the Cumberland County Board of Education is also undergoing legal review.
📸 Red-light cameras aren’t new here. Fayetteville launched its previous program in August 2015, using cameras to record vehicles entering selected intersections after the light turned red.
🚘 Locations included Skibo Road at Morganton Road, Ramsey Street at Law Road and Reilly Road at Kimridge Drive. After an initial warning period, violations carried a $100 civil penalty. During the program’s later years, approximately 14,400 to 18,000 citations were issued annually.
⚖️ Fayetteville stopped operating the cameras in November 2022 when its vendor contract expired amid a larger legal battle over how red-light camera money could be distributed.
🏫 Under North Carolina’s Constitution, the clear proceeds from certain penalties generally benefit public schools.
🏛️ In May 2024, the N.C. Supreme Court ruled that a school system could reimburse a city for reasonable expenses associated with collecting the penalties. A lawsuit challenging Fayetteville’s program was later voluntarily dismissed.
🔄 In January 2025, City Council directed staff to examine bringing the program back. If new agreements are approved and the current schedule holds, Fayetteville’s red-light cameras are targeted to return July 1, 2027.
How do you feel about red light cameras? Are they needed to stop red light runners? Or not a priority?
