Big news out of Spain animals are now officially recognized as sentient beings, not just property.

This change means that during a breakup or divorce, pets are no longer treated like objects. Instead, courts now consider who provides daily care, the animal’s emotional well-being, and which home offers the best environment.

In other words, it’s pet custody based on compassion, not ownership.

The goal is simple: reduce conflict, protect animal welfare, and acknowledge that our furry companions are truly part of the family.

Honestly… it’s a long-overdue step in the right direction.
