Thoughts/Perspectives: Will the 883 Sportster be coming back for 2027?

As always, take any spoken plans from H-D with a grain of salt. The comeback of the EVO Sportster might not even happen. H-D started development on many projects over the decades that ended up being scrapped for a host of reasons. The plan when Buell was cut in 2009 was to build a H-D badged V4 sportbike in what was dubbed “Project Overlord.” That got as far as prototype engine castings and a few mockup models before being scrapped by H-D.

Harley will hopefully play the financial numbers game wisely in the entry segment. The 975/1250cc Revolution Max Nightster/Sportster platform has been much more successful than the Revolution X Street 500/750’s were. Power and displacement mean something, even to beginning bikers when considering H-D, as when H-D tries to sell bikes that are too wimpy they become big losses that have to be written off. I see the “Sprint” 400/450 or whatever it will be as mainly a bike having crash bars installed and being used for H-D licensing courses. And dealers will REALLY have to push traditional H-D attributes like air cooling and the 45 degree V-twin engine shake, sound, and feel to be able to sell a comeback of the 883 Sportster. That won’t be an easy task. The bike definitely needs some form of refining from its last rendition in 2021 to have appeal to newer riders.

I have a 1200 EVO Sportster I ride often, for fun and commuting to work. But I can't consider the 883/1200 EVO Sportsters to be good beginners bikes. They're too heavy, they have too much torque, and they have working/handling characteristics that are somewhat on the hoodlum end of motorcycling. The 1200 Sportster is much more challenging to ride than my Heritage Softail 114! I can't see where beginners would like these bikes, and those with more experience who want to own their first Harley will skip right over them and get a more all-around pleasing big twin H-D.

"Hantavirus" is just a big media driven distraction from what was actually on that cruise ship and is probably on a whole lot of other cruise ships, if you catch my drift! 🐀 Instead of the cruise hospitality cleaning up their act, they switch the narrative to fear mongering tactics with the public.
