WATCH FOR THESE RED FLAGS FROM CLASSIC CAR SELLERS:

Unfortunately, some (more like "many") classic car sellers are just not going to be as up-front and honest as you would like. Whether that is subtlely avoiding certain aspects of a car, to straight-up just lying through their teeth to get you through the proverbial front door, it can be a minefield of mistakes navigating this process. KC Classic Cars prides itself on its customers never being surprised by what they find with our vintage rides, and the "proof in the pudding" is how nearly all of our sales come from the first buyers who see our vehicles in person.

Whether you're buying from a classic car dealer or an individual seller, you can avoid miles of disappointment and trunkloads of unexpected repair bills by being wary of these red flags (not a complete list, of course!):

1) Lacking communication--Sellers who believe in their cars are more than happy to bend your ear talking about them. But for those who offer little detail, short answers, or claim not to know much about the vehicle they're selling, you should proceed with A) caution, and B) even more follow-up questions. This is especially important if you can't see the car in person immediately. If the seller doesn't seem particularly cooperative, that's your cue to head for the exits because a good outcome is much less likely.

2) Overly positive or effusive language about the car--Sellers who want you to believe the car is perfect, or only seem to tell you what you're looking to hear, should be handled with hesitance. The fact is, no matter how nice a classic car might be, they are NEVER EVER perfect. While it's certainly true a super nice car has tons of good things worth mentioning, they all have their quirks, flaws, and foibles. An honest seller will talk through those issues with you, or at least mention things he/she thinks the car may need in the future. A willingness to talk about a classic's negatives is a good sign you're talking with a seller who is more honest than many. Those who insist their car has no flaws or issues and is "better than new" usually can't see over the dollar signs in their eyes to see their car for what it truly is.

3) They act like you're bothering them when you want more information--Now don't get me wrong, some buyers can be a total nuisance when it comes to wanting endless amounts of "additional info" without even attempting to see the classic in person. But if you're a reasonable buyer, and want to see some pictures of the undercarriage that weren't in the ad you responded to, that is perfectly reasonable. Or maybe you want a short walkaround video of the vehicle while running. These are reasonable requests, and a seller who is put off by such, or hesitant to get you this info in a timely manner should be approached with extreme caution. Whether it is laziness or straight up withholding information, a seller unwilling to fulfill reasonable asks before a purchase or inspection likely doesn't want you looking TOO closely at their ride.

This is a very short and incomplete list, but shows you how complicated it can be to navigate a successful and fulfilling classic car purchase. Looking for helpful sellers willing to give you the info you need and answer the tough questions honestly can go a long way to ensuring you score a great deal.

ROLLIN', IN MY FIVE POINT OHHH....

Check out our latest arrival, just in time for Fall cruising season! This is a 1992 Ford Mustang LX 5.0 "Feature Edition." It is also called a "Summer Edition." Approximately 2,193 were produced to stimulate foot traffic in dealer showrooms back in the Spring of 1992. Special features of these cars include the amazing "Vibrant Red" paint color only available on these feature cars. The hue was also applied to the windshield framing, mirror end caps, and the bodyside moldings, instead of the black trim other LX Mustangs received. They all came with a very attractive rear spoiler that replaced the somewhat lackluster luggage strips on the trunklid. In addition, 16" Pony wheels were painted in a special "Opal pearlescent" coating to contrast against the special white leather interiors all these cars came with. All in all, these beautiful visual changes, combined with the more subdued but muscular look of the LX's body (vs the GT's body claddings and coverings), make this a very desirable, yet hard to find example of the Foxbody Mustang era.

Fortunately, ours has had an excellent base/clear repaint over a ZERO RUST body, and looks absolutely fantastic. Originally, these cars were painted with a single stage paint that was very well known to heavily oxidize over time, so much so that it would turn polishing towels blood red when buffing them out.

This car features an as-new snow-white power top, 17" chrome Cobra wheels with Nitto Extreme tires (the mint original wheels are included in the sale), as well as some minimal, but tasteful upgrades, including a trunk-mounted CD changer, larger exhaust system, and a few basic mods under the hood. We still want to do a bit of final tuning to get her just right, but she is a true stunner and is ready for your inspection. At $16,750 as shown, or $15,800 without the Cobra wheels, we're just not sure how you can find a nicer, cleaner, AND collectible Mustang V8 convertible for the price!

ROLLIN IN MY SIX-FO! (Chapter 3)

Welp, the beast is alive and kicking! Thanks to Henson Automotive, this cutey will start, idle, and run. We've changed all the fluids, and are working on making the brakes safe and reliable. There's much more to come, but for now, this classic Chevy Impala is closer to reclaiming it's former glory. Stay tuned for more updates, and give us your comments and feedback. OWN ONE OF THE EARLIEST MUSTANGS EVER PRODUCED! Our gorgeous red over red 1965 Mustang ragtop is now available! It is the 5522nd Mustang produced EVER, making it one of the earliest Mustangs left of the more than 10 MILLION made. Its March 1964 production makes it commonly called a "1964.5" Mustang, and it's "D" code 289 4bbl engine in a red on red convertible makes it a VERY rare example overall.

As with all of our classics, this one is in fantastic mechanical and cosmetic condition, and drives every bit as good as it looks. Lots of receipts for work done, plus we took care of a couple of other niggling items so you won't have to. This car is TOTALLY original, including the generator (vs later alternators), quarter panels, single exhaust, and more. For someone who desires originality, great colors, and historically early production, you won't do better than this.

ROLLIN' IN MY SIX-FO! (Chapter 2)

Well, I pulled the Impala out of its long-term place of concrete slumber yesterday, and amazingly, it went rather smoothly. The seller, "Rob" and his wife were happy to get the garage space back, and I was able to score a reasonable stash of both original parts and pieces from the car as well as some new bits. Rob, bless his heart, even snuck in an extra snow tire and a Buick tail light into the trunk for me. 😆 Tonight, it's heading an hour west to Hensen Automotive where it will be put in the automotive intensive care unit and hopefully made to start making noises very soon. We will drain and clean the fuel system, change engine, trans, and differential oils, go over the entire brake system, and then fire this puppy up!

So I promised to explain why I decided to take on this particular project. The last 4 pictures in this post give it away. This car is literally a frame-off restoration that is 85% completed. I even found color print outs of pictures of the car with the body and frame separated showing the completeness of the restoration in progress. The engine bay is similarly finished (including complete rebuilds of both the engine AND transmission!), and on top of all of that, this car is incredibly solid and rust-free. Let me tell you (as if you don't already know), having all of that heavy lifting completed and done right is a HUGE time saver, money saver, and frustration saver. It allows you to always keep the finish line within sight, and that is a huge motivator when taking on any project of this magnitude. Untold numbers of cars, projects, dreams, and good intentions have gone unfinished and unfulfilled because of the long, hard slog a full restoration can be.

Stay tuned. As we start getting the mechanicals sorted, I'll write the next chapter of this American icon's resurgence and give you a full update.
