New episode of Built in the Midwest is up.
Driver's ed had a brake pedal on the instructor's side.
A semi doesn't.
The only thing an instructor can reach is the emergency air valve on the dash. Pull it and the truck stops hard. That's the whole safety net.
So everything else is the instructor. Reading the road ahead of you. Watching your mirrors. Keeping you calm enough to hear them while you're learning to shift.
Tom McKnight, who everybody around here calls Mac, has been teaching for 26 years. He's pulled that valve twice.
We sat down with Mac to talk about what's changed in trucking, what to watch for when you're picking a school, and what he's seen in the students who do well out there.
