⚓ DID YOU KNOW? Stump Pass Marina’s History Dates Back to 1947!
Long before the forklifts, dry storage racks, and boats we see today, our little piece of Lemon Bay had a story of its own.
In 1947, brothers Wiley and Harley Hicks, along with members of their family, began transforming a piece of waterfront property in Grove City into what would eventually become Hicks Marina.
And here’s something you might not know — the original marina basin was dug entirely by hand!
According to the marina’s published history, it took an incredible 13 years of hard work before Hicks Marina officially opened in 1960.
Over the years, the property underwent several transformations, operating under the names The Redfish Lodge and later Fish-tale Marina, which was once known for its swimming pool and snack bar.
In 1970, the property became Stump Pass Marina Inc., eventually adding a waterfront chickee hut and restaurant known as the Stump Pass Grille.
Today, that same waterfront property is home to Stump Pass Marina and the Lighthouse Grill and Tiki Bar.
Nearly 80 years after the Hicks family first began working this land, we’re still doing what this place was built for — getting people out on the beautiful waters of Lemon Bay.
The names have changed, the boats have gotten bigger, and the equipment has certainly come a long way, but one thing hasn’t changed: our roots run deep in this little fishing community we call home.
From Hicks Marina to The Redfish Lodge, Fish-tale Marina, and finally Stump Pass Marina — we’re proud to be part of Englewood’s history.
⚓ Do you remember the marina under one of its former names? We’d love to hear your stories and see your old photographs!
