THE TRACK

Grippen Park BMX is a dirt track approximately 750 feet long, with banked turns and jumps of all shapes and sizes. It is located inside the former Grippen Ice Rink with a roof overhead eliminating any rain outs that occur during a racing season. This also allows for a longer race season and is more attractive for bigger race events to be held at Grippen. The track is run by a non profit

group with volunteers. HISTORY

For over 25-years sanctioned BMX racing has been in the Greater Binghamton NY area, but when the group running Cheri A. Lindsey BMX decided to join the sanctioning body American Bicycle Association (ABA) to better suit its future growth and align with other tracks in the area it was determined a move was needed. The Grippen Park BMX track is located under the roof of the former Grippen Park Ice Rink. The ice rink was closed after a major flood hit the Greater Binghamton area in 2006. In 2008, current and former board members started the process with Broome County and Village of Endicott officials to open a track at this location. Since that time, Grippen Park BMX has grown to be one of the most well known tracks in the region. Known for our special events, Winter Racing Series and holding the some of the largest non-national races, we have quickly risen to be a "go to" spot.

It is with profound sadness that we share the news of the sudden and unexpected passing of Don Olson, Sr. As everyone knows, Don has been the true heart and soul of Bethel Supercross. He has served as the Track Operator for decades and has been involved with the track ever since it started over 40 years ago. Don truly loved all of the riders and families and lived for making the track a special place for us to come together each week. He loved seeing the huge turnout at last night’s race and the big BMX family that we have at the track. We will share more information on the arrangements in the coming days. Rest in peace, Don. We owe you many cherished memories. And we love you. ❤️

Over a year ago on October 2, 2020 we had our last race at Grippen Park BMX. At that time we didn't know it was going to be our final race. It's so sad that after having a BMX track in Broome County for 40 years the County decided that they didn't care for BMX at Grippen and evicted us leaving no BMX in Broome County. So many riders from Broome County and from all over the Northeast and Canada raced here bringing so much to the local economy. We are still pursuing a new indoor location but it is taking longer than we hoped for. All our equipment is still in storage and can be ready to go real quick so hopefully it will not be much longer.

Well today July 2, 2021 is a sad day for BMX in Broome County. For 40 years our track has been active in Broome County. First Stow BMX then Bingo BMX then Cheri A. Lindsey BMX and finally Grippen Park BMX. We moved the last items from Grippen to storage so Grippen Park BMX is officially closed. We will now turn our efforts to securing a new location for our BMX track. I will try to keep everyone updated as much as possible. I want to thanks all the riders and parents and volunteer's who have supported our organization for the past 40 years. Hopefully this isn't the end !

Here is something that just ticks me off. Do you remember back a few years ago when right before our Gold Cup race and the head of parks & recreation said we couldn't have camping at Grippen ? The NEXT day posted 4 signs there (1st picture). Next 2 pictures shows 2 motor homes and 2 trucks with sleeper berth ! What a bunch of crap ! In my opinion !

We are going to move more stuff on Wednesday at 4pm and we really could use some help. So anyone who could come to help we would greatly appreciate it.

We are looking for help on Sunday starting at 12 noon with moving all our equipment and general stuff out of Grippen to the storage facility. We have been looking for a new location for our track but until we finalize any location we will have to put everything in storage. We have already moved some stuff but there is much more. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Thank you to all parents and riders that came to last evening's meeting regarding the Grippen Park BMX facility. There were some great ideas tossed around about what we could possibly do to keep the track. We plan to take the recommendations and further talk to the powers at Broome County. To start, a call with be placed this week to an attorney that may be able to assist us throughout the process.
We plan another meeting at the same location on March 27, 2021. We will confirm the date and time in the near future.
If you are interested in a copy of the Delta Engineer's Safety report, please message Gary with your email address and it will be forwarded to you.
Thanks again to all that attended the meeting, we greatly appreciate your support and ideas.

Meeting is still on tonight at 6:30 at the Oakdale Mall. Go to the old BonTon outside entrance. Please bring something to sit on as we do not have chairs at this location. Also, we would like to Zoom the meeting as some have asked if we could but the Mall doesn't have Wi-Fi so if someone knows how to set this up and is coming we could use your help.

Meeting oakdale mall. Look for the parking lot number 2.

We have been receiving so many calls and text messages asking when we are planning to open the track for racing. Unfortunately, due to COVID 19 our track was prohibited from racing the majority of 2020, despite our best efforts to demonstrate to Broome County our ability to stay safe and "play" by all the COVID rules.
In the meantime, without any notice and without us providing authorization or permission, Broome County came to our facility, and found "safety issues" deeming the facility "unsafe", and gave us an eviction notice. Actually, it's important to note that we have had a variety of different reasons for the eviction. One being "safety issues", another stating that the "County wants to go in a different direction with the facility".
We requested a copy of the safety violations by filing a Freedom of Information Act, reviewed the "safety concerns", and found, in our opinion, nothing that would be a concern, in any way.
Regarding the statement that "the County is seeking to go in a different direction for the facility", as many of you may know, the building is in a flood zone and has been flooded on many occasions, so anything other than a BMX track would be questionable in this location.
Before sharing this information on Facebook, it is important to note that we have attempted, with very little success, reaching out to the Broome County "decision makers" attempting to explain what this track means to not only this community but the entire USA BMX racing family. It has literally fallen on deaf ears. We recently requested a tele meeting with Jason Garner, Broome County Executive, however, his office declined. It is our opinion, that misinformation has been cycling, in an effort to close down the track and evict us out of a facility that we have rented for the past 10 years. BMX racing has had a presence in the Broome County area for 40 years.
There has been a few "key players" within the County that have made the decision to evict us. Elizabeth Woidt - Director of Parks Recreation and Youth Services (607-778-2193) and Leslie Boulton - Commissioner of Public Works (607-778-2490).
We have put so much love, time, and energy building a track that allows racing throughout the entire year. We cannot simply give up now. We are the only indoor BMX facility in the entire Northeast.

Please join us for a meeting to discuss our status further, answer additional questions and hopefully come up with a solution that can help to save our Grippen Park BMX Track.
Date - Saturday March 6, 2021 @ 6:30 PM
Location: Oakdale Mall 601 Harry L Drive, Johnson City, NY (In the former Bon Ton Department Store) - (enter by Main Doors from Parking Lot).

Masks are required, and we will be practicing social distancing.

2020 was Grippen Park BMX 10th year in operation. Unfortunately, COVID 19 put a damper on any type of celebration that we may have had. So, in celebration of this milestone, even though we still can't all be together, we ask that you share the following -
"What Grippen Park BMX means/(meant) to me" (feel free to share a favorite picture if you would like as well). This is for past and present riders, parents, friends/family or anyone that has had a positive experience resulting from our track.
😊
BMX has had a presence in the Broome County area for 40 years.
