Why Driving With a Nearly Empty Fuel Tank Can Damage Your Fuel Pump 🚗⛽

Many drivers regularly wait until the fuel warning light comes on before refueling. While doing this occasionally may not cause immediate problems, making it a habit can shorten the life of your fuel pump.

The fuel pump is usually located inside the fuel tank and relies on fuel to help cool and lubricate its internal components. When the fuel level is very low, the pump may become partially exposed, causing it to operate at higher temperatures. Excessive heat can accelerate wear and reduce pump efficiency over time.

A low fuel level can also increase the chance of drawing sediment, dirt, and debris from the bottom of the tank. Although the fuel filter is designed to catch contaminants, constantly operating with very little fuel can place additional strain on the entire fuel system.

As the pump works harder to maintain proper fuel pressure, its internal components may wear out faster. This can lead to poor engine performance, hard starting, loss of power, or even complete fuel pump failure.

To help protect your vehicle, try to keep at least one-quarter of a tank of fuel whenever possible. This simple habit improves fuel pump cooling, reduces stress on the fuel system, and can help prevent costly repairs in the future.

Pro Tip: Refueling before the tank drops below ¼ full is one of the easiest ways to extend fuel pump life. 🔧⛽
