Removing, Inspecting, and Reinstalling the Compressor
The compressor needs to be inspected any time there is a compressor failure or leaks are suspected.

To remove, inspect, and reinstall the compressor, follow the steps in SKILL DRILL 12.

SKILL DRILL
12
Removing, Inspecting, and Reinstalling the Compressor

1
Reclaim the refrigerant, making note of the amount removed.
Compare this amount to the factory specifications.
Remove the belt using a serpentine belt tool or the proper wrench. Remove tension from the tensioner and slide the belt off, noting routing for reinstallation.

2
Remove the hoses from the air-conditioning system.
Cap the lines.

3
Unplug the compressor clutch.

4
Remove the mounting bolts following the manufacturer’s specifications. Pour oil from the compressor into a graduated cylinder, and check the oil for acid using acid test strips.

5
Check the resistance of the clutch coil, and check the pulley for wobble that may be caused by a faulty bearing. Check the plugs for corrosion.
Check the tag on the new compressor for oil.

6
Install the new compressor; tighten the mounting hardware to specifications.
