Heads up everyone!! Updated downtown road conditions/closures.
NORTH MAIN STREET UPDATES: We have some downtown construction updates and important traffic changes to make you aware of:
✅ VANDALIA STREET, which has been closed to the east and west of Main Street since Monday for water main work, is set to REOPEN by late afternoon/early evening TODAY (Friday, March 27), providing full access at the Vandalia/Main intersection.
🚫 NO LEFT TURN FROM (southbound) MAIN ONTO EAST VANDALIA: Drivers traveling southbound on North Main Street will no longer have the option of making a left turn onto East Vandalia at the Main/Vandalia intersection. The Illinois Department of Transportation asked the City to make this change until further notice during this construction out of an abundance of caution for drivers at the intersection (it’s a state highway). Digital signage will be updated to note the change, left-turn road signs will be removed, and the left turn traffic signal at the intersection will be covered to avoid any confusion. This change takes effect with the reopening of Vandalia (today -- Friday, March 27).
🚧 DEDICATED RIGHT-TURN LANE TEMPORARILY CLOSED: The dedicated right-turn lane from West Vandalia onto (southbound) South Main Street will be blocked (likely through next Thursday, April 2). Right turns will be permitted from the through traffic lane.
🚧 HILLSBORO AVENUE CLOSURE AT NORTH MAIN: Hillsboro Avenue access to and from North Main Street will again be blocked for sanitary sewer work that is scheduled to begin Monday, March 30. This work is expected to last for seven to 10 business days (expected wrap-up is approximately April 8-10). Local access for MCT buses will be maintained. Drivers who typically access the downtown public lot near City Hall, 118 Hillsboro, and adjacent businesses from Hillsboro are advised to use Plaza Court (off East Vandalia) or North Kansas to access the lots.
