Our RV is torn apart and we have an ‘organized’ mess going on 🧰🛠️
The frame at the front of our fifth wheel is separating from the back of the RV, so it needs a pretty major repair before we can safely head back to Texas this winter.
Before you read any further, please understand that this is not the typical frame flex issue you may have heard about with fifth wheels. This is a completely separate issue.
Thankfully, we have S.H.E.D. Blue! We were able to park the RV inside, tear apart the entire front bedroom, and get everything exposed and prepped for a certified mobile welder who is coming right after Labor Day to weld the frame back together.
This is also the reasons we stopped taking new service calls for the past 2️⃣ weeks. We needed to make sure we had enough time to take care of everyone already on our service calendar, get our own RV torn apart and prepped for the welder, and get everything wrapped back up so we’re ready to start taking emergency calls again for those who find themselves with RV issues over Labor Day weekend.
This issue didn’t exactly catch us off guard. We’ve known since 2021 that this was a possibility after we discovered a structural issue and were compensated by the manufacturer. We’ve noticed increasing signs of a problem over the last few years, and on our way back from Texas this spring, Steve kept looking in the mirror asking himself, “Why can I see inside the RV by the hitch every time we hit a bump?” We limped it back to Michigan knowing it was time to finally tear into it and see exactly what was going on.
If our RV spent its life parked at a seasonal site or only traveled locally, this probably never would have presented itself. But we’ve towed this RV all over the country, hitting all the bumps and we still make the trip from Michigan to Texas and back every year for work. At this point, it’s definitely not safe to keep towing it without getting the frame properly repaired.
🚨P.S. Before you ask, NO, we do not do structural repairs on other people’s RVs. We get calls about this type of work a couple of times a week, but we stay plenty busy doing what we do, repairing RV appliances and handling maintenance and repairs. Structural work is something we refer out to dealerships, so unfortunately, this isn’t a service we offer.
