INDUSTRY TIP: Don’t wait for a hose reel to fail during a delivery.

Just in case Jeopardy calls 😂

The word “horsepower” comes from the late 1700s and Scottish engineer James Watt.

Watt was trying to sell his new steam engines to people who were used to using horses for heavy work. To make the engine’s power easy to understand, he compared it to the amount of work a horse could perform.

He eventually defined 1 horsepower as the ability to do 33,000 foot-pounds of work per minute.

So, for example, roughly speaking, that meant lifting 33,000 pounds one foot in one minute, or 550 pounds one foot in one second.

The term was essentially an early marketing tool: instead of telling someone technical details about a steam engine, Watt could say, “This engine can do the work of about 10 horses.”

Interestingly, one actual horse can produce more than one horsepower for short bursts. Watt’s number was intended as a useful standardized estimate for sustained work.
