Kia and Hyundai owners, this one matters.
Certain Kia and Hyundai vehicles with steel key, turn-to-start ignitions have been targeted across the country because of a theft method spread on social media. The issue affects some vehicles that may not have an engine immobilizer, which makes them easier to steal.
Both Kia and Hyundai have anti-theft software updates available for eligible vehicles. The update is designed to help prevent the vehicle from being started without the key.
Please take a few minutes and check your vehicle.
Kia owners:
Call Kia Customer Service at 1-800-333-4542
1-800-333-4KIA
You can also contact our local Kia dealership here in Durango Motor Company
Hyundai owners:
Call Hyundai Customer Care at 1-800-633-5151
You can also contact the local Hyundai service center:
Animas Hyundai 4300 E Main Street

Schedule the software update. Do not wait until your vehicle is gone.
The Durango Police Department is also offering free steering wheel locks. Stop by PD Headquarters at 990 E. 2nd Ave to pick one up while supplies last.
A few other steps that help:
• Lock your vehicle every time
• Remove valuables
• Park in well-lit areas
• Use a steering wheel lock if you have one
• Consider installing a GPS tracking device or subscribing to an anti-theft service that may already be available on your vehicle
• Report suspicious activity immediately
Small step. Big headache avoided.
