An update on the road construction in front of Aerostich. This photo was taken yesterday, and a lot of progress has been made. The section of the project in front of our building was more challenging due to the abundance of bedrock that needed to be jackhammered and removed, which sure is noisy, but better than blasting. This job has been going on all summer and involves about eight blocks, and it is supposed to be completed before winter sets in. Next year, the next section of eight blocks is scheduled for the same updates.

We are still open from 8:00am-4:00pm Monday through Friday! Come stop in and say hi. 👋

PART 1: Urban-ality, Suburban-ality and, as Usual, Motos

"Suburban infrastructure development sped up during the late 1940’s as many more people began to own automobiles. Back then most post-WW2 returning soldiers and young-adults-in-general wanted a peaceful life with the promise of a safe, calm, quiet home and at least a small a back yard for the kids to play in, hopefully also with a patio having enough space for a grill, a table and a couple of chaise loungers under a sun umbrella. A suburban Shangri-la.

Twenty years later many of the children who’d been raised in these bucolically boring places found them (and their similarly boring ‘greatest generation’ parents) a bit too dull and predictable. They wanted something different for themselves as they began moving into adulthood. Along their way through adolescence one of the things some boomer-teens found and liked was motorcycles, many of which were affordable and (cough…cough…) newly reliable.."

These photos were taken last week. During the "construction season" this year, the street in front of Aerostich, along with all underlying sewer/water/gas infrastructure, is being replaced. The job is part of a multi-year street rebuilding project which includes many other blocks. The sewer and water lines now being replaced are 130-140 years old. The Aerostich building was built in 1906 for the National Candy Company, which was founded in 1903 in St. Louis, Missouri, and had 22 factories by 1904. From 1929-1981, our building was occupied by Goodwill Industries, at which time it was boarded up and all utilities were shut off. Two years later Aerostich rented the 2nd floor only, restarted the utilities, and began business operations.

"Father-son trip around northern Colorado on our KLRs. RMNP, across the Flat Tops, Trappers Lake, Independence Pass, and camping along the Arkansas near Buena Vista. Camped and fished for 8 days and rode 800 miles. R-3s kept us comfy!" -Ryan L. 😃🏍️

"Sometimes dedicated long-time recreational and amateur competition motorcyclists decide to change their relationship with riding. They’ll decide to ride even more days than they already do. For reasons they probably don’t fully understand themselves, and may not even be fully aware of, riding mostly on weekends and on wonderful warm summer evenings becomes not enough. Somehow, without quite realizing it, they sort of slip off motorcycling’s deep end.

This happened to me, and I still don’t exactly know how or why.

Sometimes, young riders begin riding for transportation to their first job, or to high school. Others start such utility transportation riding later in life, sometimes much later. Still others may enjoy riding for a year or two until ‘life’ happens to them (job/wife/kid/money/etc) and this brings a halt to their riding, but years later they take it up again..."

"This was from a trip my buddies and I took on a weekend whim to ride a 600-mile loop around southwestern Colorado (Silverton/Million Dollar Highway was the main draw). I usually carry a knife on my shoulder for emergencies, and thus a goofy photo was born! My buddies affectionately call me 'banana man' after the yellow R-3 suit, and I wear this thing rain or shine, touring, adventure riding, and commuting." -Joe Troy 😃🏍️
