The first Corvette ever built was believed to be gone forever. Then a remarkable discovery in Oklahoma brought automotive history back to life.
The car in question is a white 1953 Chevrolet Corvette carrying the legendary serial number VIN 001, reportedly the first production Corvette to leave the assembly line.
After serving as an engineering test vehicle for General Motors, the car was long believed to have been destroyed.
But decades later, an unusual early Corvette sitting in a restoration shop in Tulsa, Oklahoma, attracted the attention of Corvette historian Corey Petersen.
Through extensive research, Petersen reportedly examined engineering records, unique body modifications and unusual features, including lowered seats, to establish the vehicle's identity.
The discovery was especially significant because Chevrolet built only 300 Corvettes in 1953, making every surviving example historically important.
