Planning a Family Road Trip? How to Check Your Car Safety Checklist.

Before you get started on your road trip, please check out our “Mechanic’s Guide to an Unforgettable American Road Trip”

There’s nothing like hitting the open road, just you, the highway, and wherever you’re headed. Whether you’re packing up the family minivan, riding with friends, or taking some time for yourself, a road trip is one of the best ways to see the country and make some great memories along the way.

But before you take off, make sure your vehicle’s ready for the trip. I’ve worked on enough cars to know that a little prep now can save you a big headache later. A quick checkup before you go can mean the difference between smooth sailing and sitting on the side of the road waiting for a tow.

Here’s my top ten list to check before you start your to get your road trip:

● Check Your Tires: This is huge! Look at the tread for wear and tear, and make sure they’re properly inflated. Don’t forget the spare! Proper tire pressure isn’t just about safety; it also helps with fuel efficiency.

● Inspect Your Brakes: Squeaks, grinding noises, or a spongy pedal are big red flags. You need reliable stopping power, especially on long hauls.

● Fluids, Fluids, Fluids: Engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, windshield washer fluid—check them all! Top off anything that’s low.

● Test Your Lights: Headlights, taillights, turn signals, brake lights. Make sure every single bulb is working. You need to see and be seen.

● Battery Health: Get your battery tested, especially if it’s a few years old. The last thing you want is a dead battery in the middle of nowhere.

● Wiper Blades: If your wipers are streaking or not clearing effectively, replace them. Clear visibility is non-negotiable.

● Belts and Hoses: Give them a quick visual inspection. Look for cracks, fraying, or bulges. These can fail without warning.

● Air Filter: A clean air filter helps your engine breathe better, improving performance and fuel economy.

● Emergency Kit: Pack essentials like jumper cables, a first-aid kit, a flashlight, basic tools, and some water. Better safe than sorry!

● Documentation: Make sure your driver’s license, registration, and insurance cards are all current and easily accessible. Planning a trip across the border into Canada or Mexico, make sure you bring your passport and paperwork confirming any medication you have.

We understand how important peace of mind is when you’re venturing out. That’s why we offer a thorough and professional vehicle safety inspection right here at Mo’s Auto Shop. We’ll meticulously check every critical component to ensure you and your loved ones are safe as you explore the incredible tapestry of America. Don’t leave your safety to chance; let us help you prepare for an unforgettable adventure.

We’re here to help you hit the road with confidence! Give us a call at 515-991-3870 or SEND US A MESSAGE and we’ll come to YOU!

Recently Mo wrote an article for the Des Moines Register concerning auto parts and the possibility of Tariffs.

Tariffs will hurt my small business. But they’ll hurt my customers even more.

Running an auto repair shop is hard work. Rising costs, keeping up with changing technologies, and ensuring customers get their cars back as quickly as possible make it a tough business.

But no matter what happens, I’m going to keep my doors open. I’ll do whatever it takes to make sure my shop stays running because that’s my livelihood. My customers, though, don’t have the same options. If these tariffs go into effect after the current pause, they’re the ones who will feel it the most.

Most people don’t think about where their car parts come from, but I do. If those parts get more expensive because of tariffs, the person who will get hit the hardest is the customer trying to afford repairs.

We were just glad we were able to help and the kitten was okay.

A Mechanic, A Kitten, and a Rescue to Remember.

By Sasha Preek

If you know me, you know I simply love animals, cats being very high on my list. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to share a story I recently learned about a cat saved by a mechanic. But not just any mechanic. “Mo”, the owner of Mo’s Auto Shop in Des Moines, IA, is known for his skill with cars, but on this particular morning, it wasn’t an engine that needed fixing it was a life that needed saving.

The call came in early, before Mo’s usual workday began. A woman on the other end of the line sounded desperate. The night before, she had adopted a kitten from a rescue, and on the way home, her child had excitedly opened the carrier. The little tabby, overwhelmed and terrified, bolted straight into the dashboard of their car. Despite their best efforts, they couldn’t coax the kitten out. It had been trapped in the dark, enclosed space overnight, alone and frightened.

Kim, Mo’s wife said it really bothered him that he didn’t get called until the next morning. He knew that kitten had spent the whole night trembling, scared, thirsty and confused. He and his wife, both devoted cat lovers, rushed to the scene. They knew time was of the essence.

When they arrived, the situation became even more urgent. The tiny kitten had wedged herself so deeply inside the dashboard that she was neither visible nor audible. Mo, who has spent his life working with cars, knew this was going to be tricky. There was no way to know if the kitten was injured or if, in her panic, she might squeeze herself into an even worse predicament.

Without hesitation, Mo grabbed his tools and started disassembling the dashboard.

Bolts hit the floor, wires were carefully maneuvered, and panel by panel the car’s interior came apart. His hands moved with precision, but his heart was pounding. Minutes ticked by. Then an hour. The room was tense. Still no sign of the kitten.

And then, finally a glimpse.

A flash of fur, tucked into the center of the dash. Mo’s breath caught. The kitten was the same coloring as Carly, the cat he adores the one who follows him everywhere, who wakes him every morning, who filled the space left behind when their beloved cat Carl passed away. In that moment, it wasn’t just another job. It was personal.

He pushed forward, carefully removing more and more parts, inching closer. Almost there. The owner crouched beside him, her hands trembling with anticipation.

But the kitten wasn’t ready to be saved.

As they reached for her, she pressed herself tighter against the car’s frame. Fear gripped her tiny body. Hands coming toward her, unfamiliar and terrifying, sent her into another round of frantic resistance. She had nowhere to go, but she wasn’t making it easy.

For another painstaking hour, Mo worked, never losing patience, never giving up. And then, with one final effort, they had her. Small, shaking, but safe.

The owner wasted no time wrapping the kitten in a blanket, holding her close, whispering reassurances. Mo let out a relieved sigh, glad to see the kitten safe and sound at last.

His wife saw the emotion in his eyes. This wasn’t just about fixing a problem it was about saving a life.

Despite their protests, the owner insisted on paying them double what they had asked. “You didn’t charge enough for what you did,” she said, her gratitude overflowing. However, Mo didn’t do it for the money. He did it because a helpless little soul needed him, and he wasn’t the kind of man to turn away from such an important job.

As Mo put the dashboard back together, the kitten, now safely inside her new home, settled into the warmth of her owner’s arms. She had been given a second chance at life, thanks to a mechanic whose hands were as skilled at saving as they were at fixing.

Mo may spend his days repairing cars, but on that morning, he did something far greater he reminded us that kindness and compassion can make all the difference, even for the smallest among us.

Mo's Auto Shop is in the news!

President Trump’s tariffs are scheduled to take effect on February 1, and Iowa business owners and farmers are preparing for possible impacts.

Canada and Mexico are huge suppliers for vehicles and car parts, and with Canada stating plans to retaliate, auto and repair shops will likely be hit hard.

“If we tariff these guys, of course, they’re going to retaliate and they’re going to be able to raise their prices,” said Moutassim Meri, Mo’s Auto Shop Owner. “That’s ultimately going to come down to the consumer, and the customer has to pay more at the end to the bottom line.”

Mo’s is expecting to see conditions similar to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, with availability being low and pricing high. He is already looking for ways to negate the effects.

“We try to do online ordering, sometimes that gives a break to the customer, but unfortunately, it’s time consuming and it takes time before you get the parts,” said Meri. “Sometimes the warranty, the parts are going to be even harder because you have to send it back.”

These work around methods also cause problems because they take longer, and in the car repair business, that’s a major issue.

“First thing the customer comes in gives me the key, they ask, when can they have the car back? So, it is extreme because they depend on the vehicles going back and forth to work and stuff like that,” said Meri.

Meri is concerned that in an already tough business, the changes will put pressure on his small business and customers.

“I think being an auto mechanic, industry is actually one of the hardest things you can do because the tools and equipment, the technology and all that,” said Meri. “It is actually extremely hard, especially when the consumer has to pay for extra labor and extra parts.”

While small business owners worry about their businesses, Iowa farmers worry about their crops.

The president of the Iowa Farmers Union, Aaron Lehman, says that the leading industry in Iowa will face significant challenges under these tariffs. Lehman points out that farming profits are already low.

“Our commodity prices are already below the cost of production and most of our farmers did not end up making money this past year because of low commodity prices,” said Lehman.

With the countries already declaring they will retaliate; Lehman believes Iowa and its farmers will feel it first.

“Tariffs usually mean that the other countries will retaliate and the first place they usually retaliate is on farm products,” said Lehman. “A lot of them are grown here in Iowa, especially corn and soybeans kind of thing.”

Lehman says that while the expected responding export tariffs are going to hit hard, the commonly imported items are also an issue.

“It also means the things that farmers have to buy sometimes are from imported or imported from other countries and the prices of those things will be higher,” said Lehman. “So, I think farmers are going to feel it both on both sides.”

The Iowa Farmers Union has been reaching out to politicians about the possible effects of these tariffs on Iowa’s farmers.

“Our farmers have been working hard to try to educate policy leaders about the impact that this will make for our farmers and for our rural communities,” said Lehman. “We’re trying very hard to convince our policy leaders that while tariffs are a tool that can be used, sometimes they have, we have to be very careful.”

Lehman says that the last time tariffs affected farmers, relief was sent, but it wasn’t always sent to the small farmers that needed it.

“They only went to the very largest of farmers here in Iowa and small and medium sized farmers didn’t get their share and some farmers didn’t get any trade relief payments at all,” said Lehman. “If farmers are impacted, we want to make sure that there is a fair relief package so that family size farmers who are impacted by this can get some relief.”

While it’s not known how quickly or to what extent the tariffs will impact pricing and availability for businesses and farmers in Iowa, small businesses and farmers are both prepared to experience financial and product deficits.
